Hi Darrell,

Yes, that is the Navy DSM. Not sure why it isn't on his mini rack. Probably just never got around to having it added.

I would assume the mini medal rack was from the period between the World Wars and that the Navy DSM was not awarded until World War II. The Army and Navy sometimes gave their DSM's to high ranking officers such as Eisenhower, MacArthur and Nimitz who commanded theaters with troops from all of the branches. The Defense awards, such as Joint Service Commendation, Defense Meritorious Service, Defense Superior Service and Defense Distinguished Service Medals were created to recognize this type of service.
