For any one serious about collecting Navy Ship tabs (UIMs/Rockers) those produced between 1957 and 1975, come in 4 different regulation variations. All tabs from this period are a dark blue as opposed to the post 1985 tabs which are black with white names. Also the older tabs can be found in many different widths/lengths. The newer tabs are all pretty much 5 inches in length +/-.

The old tabs can be found as pictured here, top to bottom: the oldest design, sharp arc; the next is a bit later, the cut-edge design. The third tab down is a merrowed edge tab. The edging on these tabs kept the material from getting ragged. The bottom is a rarity, black lettering on a white background. These were a trial run to make a tab that would appear better on the summer white uniforms. They weren't made but for a handful of ships.

Outside of these for variants, there are also theatre made tabs found around. They don't conform to the official regulations for tabs. They're generally crudely made, different sized, and very noticeable to the eye, even from a distance! Check out the "USS WASP"!

Thanks for the informative tutorial. I work at the Naval History Center at NAS Whidbey and I am puting together a "rocker" collection for our museum so your info will come in very handy. I'll share a sample of what we have thus far:

Here's a few more. Not much at the moment, but I'm shaking down all the sailors past and present.

PS. My favorite is Airshipron 3 - blimps.

Here's an unusual variation. It's a Vietnamese-made tab for the USS Tom Green County. This ship was an LST and was part of the Mobile Riverine Force in VN.
