renfield Posted July 10, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 10, 2011 I got these pictures not too long ago and thought I would share them with the forum. The pictures are VERY small. about 1 inch square. My scanner did not do a good job, so I took pictures of them and croped and enlarged them. This B-17 is still around and is being restored. In the pictgure it looks like the chin turret if off. It may have been the last B-17 sent to the 8th AAF. Steve

Jack's Son Posted July 12, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 12, 2011 Nose art is a special part of my WWII sidelines. I love the great spirit these men exhibited during a very stressful time.

renfield Posted July 24, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted July 24, 2011 Looked up some more info on the Piccadilly Lilly. In August of 1959 she was retired from active service, the last of 12,731 B-17s to serve with the USAAF/U.S. Air Force. She is now on display at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino CA. She is undergoing a restoration to flight capability. I got in a bidding war for this picture and paid too much for it. I wonder now if I was bidding aginst someone from the museum. We saw this photo sell on ebay for $52.00 a month or so ago. I'll post the details of her on your last posting Regards, Jack O'Leary 100th Bomb Group Foundation Historical Staff

Steve Hi Steve, The photo is not of Piccadilly Lilly at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino,CA It's of 100th Bomb Group (H) 351st Bomb Squadron PICCADILLY LILLY II 42-37800 EP-A at Honington Air Depot being salvaged after an accident on a practice mission. 27 June, 1944....Note the fresh flak patch under the mission marks in your pic. I attached your photo and one from the 100th Bomb Group Foundation Archives in color. Both showing the same patch. Also shows the II that was painted over in your pic. memphismeister Posted August 6, 2011 Share #15 Posted August 6, 2011 Boeing B-17G (Manufactured by Douglas) In late 2008, the Museum assembled a volunteer restoration team to accelerate the process of bringing B-17G, #44-83684, “Piccadilly Lilly II” back to flight condition. In 2009, significant progress was made with respect to the short term goals of 1) enhancing the visitor experience and 2) systematically repairing and mitigating on-going degradation of structural components. Efforts have focused on the restoration of various crew stations so that visitors can more easily put themselves in the shoes of a young crew member at 25,000 feet on a bombing run over enemy territory in late WWII. renfield Posted August 6, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted August 6, 2011 Thanks for the history of the B-17, Gremlin2. I was way off. I got into a bidding war and did pay that amount for the picture. The fact that it was from the 100th makes it special to me. I have a few pictures of planes and men from that group. Memphismeister that is great info. Thanks to you also. I always learn so much from the forum members! Steve

renfield Posted November 19, 2011 Author Share #18 Posted November 19, 2011 Thanks for the kind words and info Jack. Is there any way to find out about this plane from the tail markings. It is another ebay pickup. I like the peacefull setting and the mighty warbird contrast. Too bad about the water damage, but it is in good hands now.
