I purchased this 1914 Navy shooting badge today at the flea market for $25.00. I'm not an expert on this stuff but why both sharpshooter and expert on the same badge? Does anyone have any information on the owner a N. Dunbar?

Thanks

No nothing about Dunbar... however this was a good find and very unique piece for the price!

I can tell you Dunbar was an enlisted man, because on this particular medal, rank was always included if the man was an officer.

The reason you see both Sharpshooter and Expert on the same bar is that Seaman Dunbar originally qualified as a sharpshooter prior to 1914. In 1914, he achieved Expert status. The bar below the expert bar is a requalification bar with 1914 date oval. If he had subsequently earned more shooting accolades, he would have added more of the ovals.

Some of these "ladder" badges can be quite lengthy with the number of bars.

That is one gorgeous medal.

There is a Chief Gunners Mate Norman Dunbar buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery, date of death was 9-17-1918 (WW1). This MAY be your man. Very nice badge for a great price. Good luck.
