Jumpwings,

Here is the caption to the one I posted. The entire picture can be viewed on our website here:

The other was taken from the Marshall Foundation site and can be seen here, it is labeled as the 398th IR Medical Company near Muesenthal, Germany:

Morale rations were issued in WWII. I suggest you look at this thread on the UK reenactors board. Morale boxes in the Summer of 1944.

Here is the original and caption, miscaptioning seems unlikely here.

Right, assuming the August in Normandy is correctly dated/listed, then we have proof that NWE had some of the new boxes a few months after being ordered for production, no big surprise there as NWE had priority over everything... Question, any photos of them boxes in the MTO, and the PTO?

Not to drag up an old topic, but...

For those of you that make your own K-Rations, how do you go about making the sugar cubes? I still haven't found a way to "seal" the wrappers that I really like.

I just use the domino sugar cubes from the local store, and print the labels on plain printer paper and i use super glue to seal them.

You can get much larger blocks of wax at the local hobby lobby... get a pot deep enough to boil water in and a empty 2liter soda bottle. The effect is like a double boiler. Cut off the mouth of the 2 ltr bottle at the curve narrowing down to the mouth right at the top of the straight portion of the bottle body. punch two holes and make a handle out of wire or a coat hangar and place the wax in the bottle. Placing the bottle in boiling water will melt the wax without burning it and won't ruin a pan. Take a paint brush and paint the melted wax on, OR dip the K ration boxes into the melted wax. I would suggest dipping the box half way, then setting the box on the undipped end till the dipped end cools and solidifies then dip the undipped end, over lapping the dip line and set up to cool.

EDIT: As far as the sugar wrappers, I use a glue stick to seal them closed... WHATEVER you use, make sure its non toxic!

Mix up some flour and water to make a paste, that way it's perfectly edible (well, ye know, not edible, but ye know what i mean :D ) ...that's a trick my brother used in his kitchens...

store bought boxed raisins would also be correct for a soldier's food that they carried

I remember in the movie PORK CHOP HILL during the Korean war they showed them munching on raisins in small boxes in several scenes and in combat
