Cat,

I won't even try to explain the bidding for that cap, but I may be able to shed some light on the white cap itself.

Marine Corps LETTER OF INSTRUCTION NO. 523, dated 27 August 1943 included a copy of Uniform Regulations, United States Marine Coprs Women's Reserve, 1943, approved by the Secretary of the Navy, 25 August 1943 that were published for the information and guidance of all concerned.

These regulations included Tables of Uniforms for commissioned officers and for enlisted personnel. In the Officers table there is a uniform specified as "Summer dress". The cap listed for that uniform is shown as "White" with a footnote (8) that says "Light green cord".

Now flash forward to LETTER OF INSTRUCTION NO. 670, dated 25 February 1944. The subject was a very extensive listing of changes to the above uniform regulations for the WR. One of the changes to the Tables of Uniforms for commissioned officers was:

"In column "Cap", opposite "Summer dress", strike out "White (8)" and insert "light green (12)." The numbers in parenthesis are footnote numbers. Footnote 12 reads "Spruce green with white cord.".

These changes were to take place immediately according to the LI.

Hope this information is useful to you.

Terry ("Bagman")
