ikar Posted June 29, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 29, 2011 In 1973 I took a trip to a rec area south of Dover. We drove to the beach on an old runway and set up some grills near a large gun bunker. As you can see there was still some activity going on. J_Andrews Posted June 29, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 29, 2011 That would be Fort Miles. As late as teh 1980s it was still a military reservation, but used only by a USAR Transportation Watercraft unit (thus the LARCs you photographed) AND as a recreation facility administered from Ft Meade MD. In WWII it was the area HQ base for Army anti-aircraft and coast artillery units (largely the activated Delaware Natl Gd) as well as the Coast Guard beach patrols. gwb123 Posted June 29, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 29, 2011 That area used to be loaded with coastal defenses, as well as Cape May, New Jersey. I have some photos around here from about the same time period. I'll try to get them posted.
ww2_1943 Posted May 2, 2012 Share #5 Posted May 2, 2012 It is currently being restored. I was there this past weekend for the dedication of a 16' gun from the USS Missouri donated by the Navy. Check out www.fortmiles.org for more information.
Vincennes Posted May 2, 2012 Share #6 Posted May 2, 2012 I was in the same area over Christmas. Here are a few of my photos. That is me in front of Battery Herring. Paul
