Siamundo Posted May 23, 2011 #1 Posted May 23, 2011 Just curious if this USAFE Air Defense patch was worn generically by US Air Force squadrons, or if it would have been worn by a specific squadron. The triangle patch was picked up along with it, but I cannot confirm if they were worn together. Thank for your help
Teamski Posted May 23, 2011 #3 Posted May 23, 2011 According the USAFpatches.com, the Air Defense Skilled patch dates from the 1960's and was worn by all USAFE FISF-102 pilots qualified to wear the patch. http://www.usafpatches.com/gallery/thumbna...on&type=AND The other F-102 patch could very well have been worn with it. The site doesn't have an ID for which squadron wore it.... -Ski
Randy Posted May 23, 2011 #5 Posted May 23, 2011 Ski hit most of it. The design uses the primary colors of the 86 FIW (later 86 Air Division) of blue and yellow. All USAFE interceptor units were assigned to the 86th when these qualification patches were introduced. There were 2 other "rankings" used: Qualified and Expert. Also, there is another set that says "Interceptor" rather than "Air Defense". It is unclear if one design replaced the other, or if the AD ones were for Ground Controllers ant Interceptor were for the pilots. Randy
