How come...

How come it seems like specific events/battles of WWII are not represented by/in reenactments anymore? It seems that many are focused on a generalized late WWII impression, or it seems that way.

Speaking as a spectator, not a reenactor.

Most reenacting units/organizations don't have the manpower, equipment or terrain to replicate a specific battle.

A lot of organizations will at least give the scenario a place and timeframe such as Operation Cobra, Sicily, Battle of the Bulge, Africa 1942, Russia 1943, etc. so that units can wear/use apprpriate uniforms, insignia and equipment.

That said, it seems that most scenarios end up being post-D-Day northwest Europe, so does it really matter if it's pinned down to a specific time & place? It's all about small unit tactics anyway, since there is little if any realistic use of air power, artillery, massed armor formations, etc. in reenacting.

Good points Steve.

It seems like most groups are more closely outfitted for a June 1944 look, it would be nice to see some early 1945 impressions.

Always better to have earlier stuff that later. You could find people wearing early war stuff right to the last shot fired. Seeing most people only have one complete impression, it's best to go with that which you can use at events with the broadest timeframe possible.

Armed 2 tha Teeth

Our group represents a unit which did not enter combat until November 1944 and so all of our events are late-r war themed. This past weekend (and last year at the same event) at the Army Heritage Education Center in Carlisle, PA we portrayed the 100th ID on April 19, 1945 near Flein, Germany.

We are still getting our pictures together but here is one taken by a visitor.

I agree that it's acceptable for early stuff to have been used till the end, but it would be kind of nice to see some guys with M43 shovels instead of M1910 and some M43 uniforms too.

That sounds good, at least it isn't another "airborne" or "ranger" unit. These events need some variety too, looks like you use M43 uniforms too.

My unit portrays the 2nd SS Rgmt "Germania" during the first day of the invasion of Poland. Can't get any more early war then that! :D

Most of your better units will have two impressions.

We (Able 506th) have the "summer" (Normandy)uniform of the m-42's with the clean helmets, all the netting and mostly khaki gear.

Our "winter" (Holland, rest of war) is 43 uniforms with double buckles (mostly), od gear and scorched and dirty pots... The "grunge level" depends on how late in the war it is..

Doesn't every group do this?

It doesn't appear so..some of them see anything possibly considered post June 1944 as implausible to have seen use before the end of WWII, even during reenactments set in the last two months before WWII ended in 1945!

It sounds like your group has very good impressions.
