Found this one with Bill Holden, interesting that he goes by his stage name as his Army name, he was born William F. Beedle, but he was already in Hollywood before entering the Army, still one would think the Army would not recognize a Stage Name as a legal name.

Holden's brother incidentally (with the family surname obviously) was KIA in WWII as a Naval Aviator over New Ireland in the South Pacific in January 1945. Kavieng New Ireland was a Japanese stronghold like Rabaul, and was left to wither on vine by MacArthur, and was just subjected to allied air raids.

If Holden had his name legally changed before he entered the service, they would use the new name.

From my Deep Background source. Turns out he did use his real name when he was went in, but after a point However, the Air Corps brass obviously had better use for Beedle to make training/publicity films under his stage name...and Lt. "Holden" obviously was glad to go along with the gig.

Willie Mays.

SAY HEY Willie Mays.

The United States Army drafted Mays in 1952 during the Korean War (1950–53) and he subsequently missed most of that season and all of the 1953 season. Mays spent much of his time in the Army playing baseball at Fort Eustis, Virginia.[23] It was at Fort Eustis that Mays learned the basket catch from a fellow Fort Eustis outfielder, Al Fortunato. Mays missed about 266 games due to military service.

Here's one I never knew of, Efram Zimbalist JR, 9th Infantry Division, though it don't say regiment, by his rack it seems he was a enlistedman for a spell.

Earned a Purple Heart at Huertgen Forest where he was wounded in the left thigh by a shall fragment while leading an infantry platoon during an attack on Germany’s Siegfried Line.

Singer Steve Lawrence was drafted into the Army in the late 50's and served as the official vocal soloist with The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" in Washington, D.C.

Here's Pete Rose, USAR XX Corps Fort Thomas Kentucky, 478th Engineering Battalion, with Johnny Bench in the same unit in like 1968, they were cooks, perhaps MOS trained QM Cooks?  Rose served from 1963 to 1969 in the reserves. He went on a USO Tour to South Vietnam in late 1967, interestingly while he wears no rank insignia or TAPES on his supplied tropical uniform, he was technically a serving soldier as he was still a reservist, a Sergeant E-5 I think, the same thing could apply to Johnny Bench when he went with Bob Hope on the 1970 Christmas Tour, Bench was still a reservist..

There is no doubt that that is "Joltin' Joe" standing next to Rose in the bottom photo. I've never seen this photo of Johnny Bench before. Thanks for sharing it.
