I recently picked up a couple of these but wasn't sure if they were period made or not. They look like Asian or Japanese embroidery from the front, but the backs have me a bit puzzled. SOme of the lettering has red backing thread and there is a thick, clear coating applied to the back. They came together with some US made 322nd Bomb Squadron and 91st Bomb Wing (H) patches. Any thoughts or opinions? Thank you very much :)

MMMM... Can't say for sure.

From the photo it looks like it has a khaki base cloth. A lot of the machine made fakes coming out of Vietnam currently use this with a cut edge.

Also, nothing on here seems to line up, and the shield seems lopsided.

Does the thread look like a natural material or synthetic? The current Vietnam made ones use synthetic.

The 322nd Bombardment Squadron was attached to the 91st Bombardment Wing (Heavy) out of Glasgow AFB, MT. the 322nd was Deployed to the 3rd Air Division Anderson AFB, Guam in 1966 - 1967 and in 1968 for Arc Light Missions. Also can't say for sure.

Hello Gil,

Thank you for your interest. I am not positive if the base material is khaki colored. If it is, it is a very, very light khaki. To my eyes, it almost looks white albeit a dingey or grey colored white. As for the thread, the white embroidery definitely glows under a black light but when burning a loose thread on the back it definitely burns like cotton-that is it does not not ball up into a hard end and instead just ashes at the end. I don't think the shield really looks lopsided to me, it might just be the angle of the picture. In fact, if I were to fold the patch vertically in the center both the left side and right sides of the patch seem to line up with each other pretty well. The only portion which might seem a bit askew is the top slant of the white border on the blue field at the top to the left of the letter "V". It is definitely straight, while the same slant on the right side to the the right of the letter "M" has a very slight inward or downward curve to it. I hope this helps.
