Sabrejet Posted April 29, 2011 Author Share #52 Posted April 29, 2011 Hi Ian, well a good choice for a birthday present by Mrs Sabrejet, she did ask me which I thought you would prefer the tank museum and driving or a flower arrangement course, I told her you were a little petal and that it should be the tank driving . Looks like you had a good day out there and in sunshine. A long term friend has always told me that his father was involved in the recovery and transportation of the Tiger I back to England for evaluation during the early part of WWII. ken Hi Ken...yes, and thanks for your assistance in helping her fix it! gwb123 Posted May 1, 2011 Share #56 Posted May 1, 2011 Regarding the collection at Aberdeen Proving Ground... it is of course being moved to Ft. Lee. I believe it will now all be moved indoors for future preservation.
chris3bs Posted May 1, 2011 Share #57 Posted May 1, 2011 A Sherman DD with floatation-screen erected. Deployed with mixed success on D-Day. What a greeting when these tanks made it to shore on D-Day under this type of cover. I have been watching the "TANK BATTLE" series on the Military Channel. Canadians took alot of casulaties in these tank battles. One of these days I will make it there and see those heavily fought areas duiring D-Day. Sabrejet Posted May 1, 2011 Author Share #58 Posted May 1, 2011 What a greeting when these tanks made it to shore on D-Day under this type of cover. I have been watching the "TANK BATTLE" series on the Military Channel. Canadians took alot of casulaties in these tank battles. One of these days I will make it there and see those heavily fought areas duiring D-Day. The DDs were quite successfully deployed on the British/Canadian beaches. However, they were less so on Utah and Omaha beaches because they were launched too far off shore in a heavy swell. Consequently, most of them were rapidly swamped and went straight to the bottom, thus a vital asset was denied to the first-wave of the American assault. D.A.T. Posted July 20, 2011 Share #61 Posted July 20, 2011 Armoured "nose-art"?! Hi Ian, just checking out your thread,(weather is still crappy over here) you make an old tanker's heart bleed, and came across this picture, that's a 73rd Armor tank :w00t: , is it a original, or just painted up with 73rd Armor markings ? Hi Pat...I think all Europe's socked-in at the moment, which is a bit of a bummer as the big "War & Peace" show is this weekend. I'd better break out my wet-weather gear! As an ex-tanker you'd love it (the show, not the weather!) http://www.warandpeaceshow.com/ Can't comment on your pic yet as it's just coming up as a file number on my monitor. I'm at work so it might be due to the in-house filtering software (they're hot on German porn! ) I'll check it out at home this evening. Ian

D.A.T. Posted July 20, 2011 Share #64 Posted July 20, 2011 Ian, done a little digging, maybe this'll help your memory? http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://...1t:429,r:6,s:80 I'd love to go to the War & Peace Show, even in the rain, I'm originally from Washington State! :w00t: But, just spent a week in Normandy last month, my son is getting married this month, so my wife is keeping a tight chain on me. Watch out for that German porn, it'll make you go blind! :naughty:
Sabrejet Posted July 20, 2011 Author Share #65 Posted July 20, 2011 Pat...you meant the tiger face Patton? It's a museum reconstruction. Quite effective though. Ian

Ian Ian, that's what I figured, it was wishful thinking when I saw the 73rd Armor markings, I reckon the museum just picked the 73rd at random, considering how many tank battalions were involved in the Korean War, including tiger face markings.
