AIMS AND OBJECTS

The National Daughters of the Grand Army of the Republic was chartered at Springfield, Illinois, June 21st 1907.

OUR MOTTO: “Lest We Forget The Boys In Blue.”

Aims and objects: To perpetuate the memory of the men who saved the Union, to perpetuate the name of G.A.R. for them. To care for needy Comrades of the G.A.R., to stimulate patriotism and loyalty among the members of the Order. To teach the rising generation a broader patriotism, a knowledge of the principles for which our fathers fought. With this aim in view, a Junior Department of the Order was formed, know as THE CHILDREN OF THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC. The watchwords of our Order are those of the G.A.R., Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty.

MEMBERSHIP: The Active Membership of this Order consists of the lineal female descendants, who shall have attained the age of 16 years, of all honorably discharged Union Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines of the War of 1861-1865 and of all those who died in service.

The Honorary Membership of this Order consists of all honorably discharged Union Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Army Nurses of the War of 1861-1865, and all lineal male descendants of the aforesaid heroes of 1861-5 who shall have attained the age of sixteen years.

OUR WORK: This organization is patterned after the Grand Army of the Republic in its patriotic work and its principles are the same. The “Boys in Blue” have made the history of the G.A.R. and it is the work of their daughters to perpetuate this history. We, therefore, urge daughters, grand-daughters, and great-grand-daughters of Union Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines to unite with us in this work.

OUR BADGE: The little bronze button or replica thereof in a circle of gold with the words “Daughters of the G.A.R.,” enameled in blue thereon.

The work of the Order is appropriate, impressive and beautiful and appeals to all patriotic persons. If you love the Cause, you will love the Order.

If you cannot state in full your eligibility, give is what data you can and we will aid in your research. All daughters of honorably discharged Union Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines of the Civil War 1861-1865 are requested to communicate with us and help perpetuate the glorious history of our noble fathers, their honored names, and their organization – the grandest in the world – THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC.

We fully realize the inheritance which is ours through birthright, the flesh and blood of the grandest body of men that ever lived. We are proud to go down in history as an “Independent Order,” preserving the true history of the Civil War, marking historical places, building monuments and making better citizens, being ever loyal to our Country and to our flag.

Below is a Past Commander's badge from the Daughters of the G.A.R. Unfortunately it is missing its gavel pendant which would hang down from the loop at the bottom of the suspension bar.

Kevin,

Nice medal. Do you know if the organization still exists? It is not considered one of the allied orders of the GAR. The allied orders are:

- Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW)

- Auxilliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Cilvil War (ASUVCW)

- Womens Relief Corps, Auxillairy to the GAR (WRC)

- Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (DUVCW)

- Ladies of the GAR (LGAR)

To my knowledge the GAR never recognized any other organizations or allowed any other organization to use their name or symbols. It's possible that it's an offshoot of one of the above groups but none of their histories mention them.

Jim
