USMC-RECON0321

This is the only store we got a chance to go in prior to going out on the month long field Op. And I bought these two post cards there but had no idea what or where they were for, I just liked the picture on them

USMC-RECON0321

This is the two types of tents we used. The bigger tent we didn't use much but required us to pull it on a Aku-sled (Spelling?) up and down those hills hooked into harnesses like dogs.

The smaller tent was the 7 man Norweigan tent sheets we would tear down and each pack one sheet in our packs.

It was a real pain in the morning becuase with 7 sleeping inside the condensation from body heat and breathing would build up ice on the sheets and make them 3x heavier to pack out again.

Then our next choice in sleeping qtrs was the good old snow cave!! I liked this, kept us warm and didn't have to carry it the next day!! See in the pic we even personalized out doorway!! By the way I'm "Bahlau" on the right side. Not sure what I was thinking with the cheezy mustache, that's the only time I had one in the Corps, I guess anything to help keep the face warm... :lol2:

The names don't sound familiar.

Do you know which Recon unit they were in? Battalion Recon or Force Recon, then do you know if they were 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?

  • 4 years later...

I think this is the pair of boots B229 mentioned. There are two other similar pair that will follow. I suspect all branches of the service were involved in testing these. All 3 pair I show came from Ft Bragg. All 3 pair of boots are experimental. The only markings are size. There are hand written test numbers in two pair which is typical of experimental items.

This first pair is a jungle boot style but it is Gortex lined. It has a Panama style sole but with a square toe and grooved heel for ski bindings. It is all brown. Oil finished leather.

I found a pair of these experimental boots with the ski binding type sole yesterday the leather is well worn but the soles seem almost new and hardly look like they were used.
