Hi folks,

I piked this up not too long ago and really haven't had the time to go through it all yet. Included with this medal group which formally belonged to Staff Sgt. William S. Gavitt of the 8th AAF/338 Bomb Group is a large box of paperwork and pictures. Paperwork includes enlistment papers, physical records, training records to include his written notes from gunners school, documents for his awards, personal notes about some of his day/missions that appear to have been written just after the actions, squadron rosters, discharge papers, and numerous documents from many 338 Group reunions.

Pictures include 8x10's of his crew in front of their plane "Virgin on the Verge" and numerous pictures of other bombers and fighters that appear to have been taken out of his window while in flight.

Everything came in the frame as you see it.

Any info/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Very nice grouping of his items , are you sure his "Group" was the 338th ???? I ask this as the "Official" group book I have does not list a 338th BG , I'm curious as to if this may have been his "Squadron" or if there was a "Typo" somewhere ?????? The 338th was a Fighter Group up until the end of WW-2 then became a "Bombardment" Group in May 5th,1947 , so he would have to have been with a different Bombardment Group during his WW-2 service time . are there any other photos showing the aircraft with fuselage/tail markings ?

Darn typo.. How about the 388? I'll have to go through the stuff better this weekend but some of the paperwork does day 388 not 338.

Thank you,

Rob

I like the grouping; but I would take it out of that frame if I were you. Too much wasted space the way they did it.

I would take a pic of the way it is now, and keep that to show people what it was like when you acquired it.

Hello , I know that this post was from awhile ago but I am hoping that I can get in touch with joefriday22 who posted about the 388th BG . The plane was Virgin on the Verge. The medals photos and notes were from my Uncle William Gavitt. If you could contact me that would be great, I would be willing to purchase the memoir from you. Thank you Jeff Gavitt
