I just found this lovely greenback, and very undersized, Southern Defense Command. Shown here with the regular white back, normal size patch, for comparison.

I haven't been collecting for very long, but I have managed to collect a few greenbacks for my collection. What I would like to ask is, who made the greenbacks, gemsco or a sub-contractor to gemsco ? Were they made pre or post WWII ? A friend advised me that if I see a greenback, buy it, it will only increase in value, True or False?

Here is my answer to your questions...

1. As far as I know, there is no information on whether any specific manufacturer made the greenback patches. Gemsco has a distinct style of embroidery, so it would be easy to spot a greenback made by them.

2. yes...lol. Most US made greenbacks were made in the pre to early war period, hence the craze. Conventional wisdom is that if you have a greenback patch, it is WW II manufacture. However, there are some that are not US made (specifically German made Occupation era).

3. Your friend is partially correct. Some greenbacks, like the 1st Army or 27th ID, are fairly easy to find. As such, they will not increase in value as much as others. Others, either due to scarcity or unit popularity, could see a rise in prices.

I hope this helps.

I believe this 7th Div is a Greenback. As I did not see an example posted here I wanted to show it on this thread before I sold it. Richard

Flash washed out colors and I tried to delete but system won't let me so here is a better one. :D

5th Division.

Is this a greenback? Looks green.

That is indeed a greenback variation of the 5th ID patch.
