It sure was different times. Just think if that would have caught on as well and became a standard. IIRC unit patches were not originally authorized either until troops started to do it for motivational reasons during the first world war and combat patches were also not originally authorized until close to the end of WWII when soldiers started to do it when they were getting realigned with other units. I might be wrong on some of that but that is how I remember hearing it.
