Civil War era holster?

Recommended Posts

This one appears to be Civil War era and may be for a 51 Navy Revolver. Does anyone have anymore information on this piece?

How wide of a belt would this fit. Civil war belts are usually 1-3/4" wide. I measured an Infantry belt and Officer's belt and they both measure the same. Also, how does the strap fasten to the holster and what is the measurement of the length? Just looking at it it does not appear long enough for the Navy revolver.

The loop on the back could hold a belt up to 2.25" in width. The front of the holster to the bottom measures 9 1/4" and the back measures about 12." The top flap has a piece of leather that is sewn in and it slides into another leather strap sewn into the main body. There isn't a single piece rivet on the entire piece. I have a feeling this is definitely civil war period but it may be English for an Adams or some other import piece.

May possibly be for another piece, the holster for the Colt or Remington were generally thinner and longer than this one, the Remington has an overall length of 14" and I believe the Colt was around that also. If it indeed is Civil War era it looks like it would be a better fit for the Adams. I'll keep looking around and if I come up with anything will let you know.

Could you post a picture of the holster with the flap open?

Well, it may possibly be a Civil War era but I'm leaning to post Civil War. Most, but certainly not all Civil War holsters had a strap and finial closure. Some did have a strap closure such as yours but most that I have seen had a wider strap, once again I am not completely ruling out that it is not Civil War. Probably the only way to find out exactly what it fits is if you know someone with the old Adams or even possibly an old Starr revolver is to try them. Maybe even take it to a gun show and try that way. Either way it is a really neat old holster. If I come across anything that will help out I will certainly post it.
