VETERANS OF UNDERAGE MILITARY SERVICE (VUMS)

The Veterans of Underage Military Service was founded in 1991 as an organization which recognizes individuals who, for whatever their reason, enlisted in the US Armed Services under the age of 17 years old.

From their website, their purpose is:

"to establish and maintain contact with those who served in the armed forces while underage; to assure all underage veterans that there will be no retribution from the Federal Government for their fraudulent enlistment; to enjoy the friendship of comrades through our meetings and reunions, our bi-monthly "Young warriors" newsletter and to record for history the unique experiences of yesterday's youngsters as underage veterans."

If anyone of our members who have served in the US military and meet this requirement, I encourage you visit the VUMS website to learn more about their organization.

  • 9 months later...

My father forged the date on his birth certificate when he was 16 so he could join the fight. By the time he was out of boot camp the war was over and his first assignment was with the Occupation Army in Japan.

That simple little act came back around to bite him on the rump years later in the early '60's when he got his Crypto Clearance to work on computer programming.

16 year old Billy L. Fikes happy as he can be to be in the US Army like his older brothers Lew, Jess and Red.
