post-8535-1298593095.jpgThanks. Here's a nice early post-war theater-made Europeam Command patch with a matching American Forces radio tab...they're behind plastic so there's some refection in the photo.

another pic. The man is still on active duty and would rather not have his name mentioned! Shows how the two tabs are displayed on the uniform. A GOOD shot to say the least!

No, I believe it was back in the 1950's when it was stationed in Germany.

When the 11th Abn Div was inactivated in Germany in 1958, its three Abn Inf Regts were used to form two Abn Inf Battle Gps. These were carried over, in place, into the newly-activated 24th ID. The notion of Brigades was new -- in 1958 only the 1st and 2nd were active, as Separate Bdes, at Benning and Devens, as test units. But to have an Abn-specific echelon, the 24th (apparently with no HQDA approval) conjured up the "24th Abn Bde". This provisonal Bde came close to invading Lebanon, but did not, showing the flag with an exercise in Turkey instead.

In 1963, the 24th (and the whole Army) converted to the Division: Brigade: Battalion scheme, and the USAREUR Abn Inf moved under the 8th ID.

BTW there was a plan to form the 174th Abn Bde (Sep), consisting of Bns of the 509th, to take the ex-24th ID abn mission, but it was instead made a Divisional bde.

Re Post #132: The same combination was worn by 2-503rd IN when it was in Hawaii and subordinated to the 25th ID, Jun 60 to Jul 61. It was then assigned directly to USARPAC, until 1963 when it moved to Okinawa and the then-new 173rd Abn Bde.

A vet told me that on Class A's they wore the black & gold tab over the USARPAC SSI but on field dress wore ONLY the tab....
