If its that bad, why do you watch? :dunno:

best wishes - Dave

It is very simple, I am hoping for better each episode. Once the series is completed I won't watch them again.

best wishes,

jeff

Anyone else sick of sledge? I'm sick of the guy. Spielberg should have brought in some actors with quality skills. Snafu is the only one i like, he's got that crazy soldier package down pat.

Part 9 was good and I think it showed the misery of Okinawa pretty well. Too bad they weren’t able to show more with Wana Ridge, Sugarloaf Hill and Shuri Castle, but like they say, “sorry folks we’re out of time.” I was totally confused by the ending. Maybe I’m wrong but I believe an officer mentioned something about destroying an entire Japanese city in the blink of an eye. Obviously it was a reference to the atomic bomb. The first bomb was dropped on Japan on August 6th 1945. The fighting on Okinawa ended on June 21 when the island was declared secure. When the comment was made, Sledge and the other Marines were shown geared up with weapons and filthy dirty as if they were still in combat. That’s not possible. The fighting on Okinawa ended a month and a half before the atomic bomb was dropped.

It was interesting seeing all of the uniforms and gear used in the show last weekend. I was surprised to see the helmets were cast plastic, not steel pots. All the shovels and bayonets were cast rubber as well. They were selling a full outfit with pants, jacket, shoes, leggings, helmet & cover with a pack & web gear for $600 which I thought was a bit much. I know one of the costumers who was there and he brought out a box of stuff they ended up with that was all original WWII USMC gear. He pulled out an early P-41 pack with the permanently attached D rings on the shoulder straps. He sold it to me for $40 which I thought was a deal. I only have a couple other ones like that & I haven’t seen too many others over the years. He said it wasn’t used in the show because they couldn’t figure out how to make it work with the D rings on the straps like that.

Another pile of sh*t episode.

Yep! A good way to put it.

Some ask why do we still watch it if we don't like it? Because we are going to be asked what we think of it. Have to be ready with an answer...

I had mixed feelings. The biggest disappointment was again, you don't get any context for the operation except for Hanks' narrative at the beginning. There is no information on other units that were on the island or how there was an entire US Army there along with the Marines. The episode went from April to August in an hour and didn't tell the viewers where the Marines were or what they were doing or even why they were there!

Now, that being said, the scenes that were shown were very well done and from everything I've read, captured the emotions of the campaign.

The digging in scene has always stuck out in my mind from when I read Sledge's book, and I thought that was done fairly well. "Skipper said 5 meter intervals!"

The latter half of this series has been far superior to the beginning. One episode for Okinawa was not enough, especially when we got two episodes for Peleliu (a 1 month campaign for the Marines) and Okinawa was three times longer and much more significant to the war as a whole.

Next week's episode should be interesting, but I'm expecting another Episode 3.

I liked this one .

As Jeff said the time line was a bit wrong though.

Liked the bodies and the dead woman and the stench of war came to the fore for me.

Thought the officer shooting the Japanese soldier perfect.

its a pretty solid 9 out of 10

Quite literally. That scene was quite disturbing

Fixbayonets!

Last nights Okinawa episode really gave me an appreciation for what these guys went through. The sheer carnage, fear, rain, mud, anger, insanity, frustration, etc. I thought to myself it's a good thing we don't have smell-a-vision otherwise I would be running out of the house. I know many members here take issue with the series and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My opinion is this episode was the most realistic & grity look at combat that I have ever seen on film.

Hard to add much to what's already been said...

I really enjoyed this episode. The depiction of Sledge's slide into combat fatigue, and then jerking himself back from just over the brink was quite moving (if not exactly realistic, I think). I say that b/c he had no sleep or getting clean when he "snapped back" to humanity, but still made for a good story - artistic license? I agree with somebody's comment above about all the Americans being psychos. Typical Hollywood, but also likely accurate, based on the long, grueling campaign they all faced (American and Japanese!).

I missed the 27th ID soldiers, but sure picked up on the XXIV Corps "intelligence officer," er, chickensh*t. Thought that response by Sledge's company commander was appropriate, and glad to see the results.

It was good to see some depictions of Japanese brutality (shooting the family, pushing civilians into Marine fire at bayonet point), for a change, to offset (or complement?) the depictions of Marine brutality. The description of Snafu getting to know the replacements was pretty good, and a real surprise from how the vets are typically depicted in books of dealing with them. I'd need to reread "With the Old Breed" to know if that's historically accurate or more artistic license.

I'm curious how the directors will work a scene of female (partial?) nudity into episode 10. Seems like they've managed in episodes 3, 4, 8 and 9. The method in episode 9 was pretty gross, and not really necessary. To me, that lack of necessity is why the nudity (so far) has drawn comment on this thread.

One more Sunday to go.

Set to air March 14 and will air every following Sunday

Article from link: http://www.tvguide.com/News/HBO-Premiere-P...ic-1013190.aspx

HBO's 10-part miniseries The Pacific will set sail Sunday, March 14. The series will air every Sunday at 9/8c through May 16.

The Pacific comes from executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman. The trio is the same team behind HBO's Emmy-winning 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers.

Read our Band of Brothers Blu-ray review

Like Band of Brothers, The Pacific chronicles World War II. This time, the focus will shift from the European to the Pacific theater. The series will follow the real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines from the United States' entrance into World War II to V-J Day and beyond.

Hoping this doesn't drive up USMC prices  , but it probably will.

Can't wait,

Haydn

I have been watching every episode. I just read in a magazine that the PACIFIC was to be 13 episodes. But TOM HANKS said it would be too expensive to produce the scenes for the BATTLE OF MIDWAY so they just did 10 episodes.

I must be in the minority, as I loved every aspect of this series except that it is only 10 parts. I liked all the characters, actors, blood, gore, b@@bs & story lines. The little inaccuracies that many of you pointed out did not bother me one bit. Being a medal collector, I would never have noticed any issues with uniforms. I wish I had the keen eye many of you have.

In my opinion, this series was based on the recollection of a few men, not a chronological history lesson on the "Pacific Campaign". Maybe it should have been called something else. Many of these men probably did not know why they were on each island, or the reason for each battle. They followed orders & told their stories accordingly.

Here's to the next series "Enterprise - The Big E" (one can wish!) - Dave

here is a quick picture. The pink arrows are 03A3s which are in the show. The green arrows point to 03s which should be the ones used in the show. Notice the different position of the rear sight and the different handguards. Speaking of guns in this show did anyone see any BAR gunners? I did not, unless I missed it. Definately should be some BAR men.

best wishes,

jeff

I saw some in episode 9 when they were loading up to leave at the end of the show.

Dave,

I don't think you are in the minority. I know several people who have really enjoyed the series. Count me as one of them. I think most of the people who like the series have not joined in on this thread because they got tired of the criticism. This is just my opinion. Each week my Dad and I watch the previous weeks episode before watching the current one. We catch a lot the second time around that we missed the first time. I am looking forward to watching it again from beginning to end.

I don't have a problem with it.Could a few things been done differently? To me maybe,to others

I dont know. It's TV.I'm not gonna climb a clock tower and start bangin away with a 30ought6 because

of something that was seen or not seen.I do know this, there are a few people that have posted opinions

here that have sure missed their calling as screenwriters and film critics.Must be why Hanks and Spielberg

have had so many flops and are so broke that they can't keep their heads above water. ;)

Count me as another, if it's not already obvious by my large reviews of each episode. My only gripe has been the b@@bs, but that's really all about it.

I think the nudity and sex in this show were added along with the gore and violence to show all aspects of the war as close to reality as possible. In other words, it's not just a cheap shot thrown in for anybody's kicks. Anyone who has been in the military knows you have zero privacy. I’ve also heard you see a lot of naked bodies in any combat situation. You would see the people in your unit bathing and using the toilet constantly, you would see wounded people with no pants on, you would see naked dead bodies with their clothes blown off or burned off, etc. It’s also no secret that military men seek out women (of any sort) while on leave or liberty and have an insatiable appetite for sex. Personally, I think the nudity/sex angle has been toned way down for this series. If they made it more like reality the show would have a XXX rating for sure.

I should have elaborated, I do love B@@bs, I'm mean, I'm a horny 19 year old. But I personally believe the extended sex scenes are unneeded, i.e. the scene where John Basilone totally dominates his female companion at random at the beginning of Episode 5, or the "O" face and thrusting that we witness multiple times on Episode 3. I believe this ideology and the fact that this was part of their lives needs to be portrayed, however I believe it should be done a lot more subtly.

I know there is that argument: "you don't want the sex but you will let the gore slip by?". I believe these are apples to oranges. Sex is a fixed and repeated attribute in life that anyone can experience, war is not. Sex can be mentioned and people get the point, an open head wound that SNAFU is using as a basketball hoop cannot.

It's not as much the nudity as it is the sex I cannot stand. There were multiple instances in the show where I could handle it, like in Ep 4 when the nude officer commits suicide, or Ep 5 where multiple men undress in the rain for a shower, or more recently in Ep 9 where we see an exposed women who was killed while breast feeding. These can all be necessary, it is the soft-porn that isn't.

My two cents,

-Nathan

As many people have said, this series is about the Marines not the Army. I don't mean to be rude but I don't understand why people keep getting upset because the Army is not in the series. This series is about 3 Marines....

I haven't seen any shots,that I can remember,that showed anybody in

camouflaged utilities, nor have I heard anybody mention it. That the one

thing that I thought they would really be heavyhanded with.Maybe they

weren't issued to everybody and the way that it's being done is accurate.

In a lot of photos you can at least see a mix, camo shirt regular pants and

vica/versa.
