Very nice set up. After I picked up a 1942 case I started looking for WWII maps. They're plentiful and inexpensive. You need to get a Messenger's Book for the pouch behind the pencils. You can also go to Hardscrabble Farms or do a search and find reproducible paperwork you'd likely find in an officer's map case.
I was thinking this may be an Engineers Field Sketch Table accessory, but didn't find it in my 1939 FM 21-35 SKETCHING manual. Nor was it in 1940 TM 5-235 SURVEYING manual, although it may have unofficially been part of the equipment. Soldiers often augmented their kit with items deemed necessary. Attached is a Sketch Table like I have.
Shown as part of my collection. This PLUMB 1944 hatchet has been in my family since as long as I can remember. My dad used it while land surveying in Oklahoma in the 1960s and 1970s. He gave it to me when I started my "official" collecting.
