  2. This narrative is from my collection, It's from a WW 2 Ranger I meet at McDill AFB R A N G E R ALLEN EDWARD MERRILL PLANK OWNER 1ST. RANGER BN. ENCLOSED IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF RANGER ALLEN’S info, supplied via the news letter from Allen E. Merrell and ok’d for use, by his daughter. I MET ALLEN AT MY RANGER DISPLAYS AT MCDILL AFB. He was born in 1922, in Buffalo NY. Entered service in March 1942 after jump school w/ 82nd a/b , assigned to 509th AIB and shipped to England. A notice was posted about a new unit being formed. That unit was the 1st. Ranger Bn. It was formed in the British Commando style. After Ranger training, Allen was assigned to Co. F, First Ranger Bn., as a scout. He participated in Operation Husky. Co. F was the first wave of Rangers on the Gela beach. Allen received the Silver Star and Purple Heart on that operation. On Sept.1943 ( Operation Avalanche ) Salerno Italy was launched after combat, Allen was awarded his second purple heart. After release from the hospital, he was assigned to 4th. Ranger Bn. On Jan. 22, 1944 ( operation Shingle ) Anzio. Cisterna is where the Ranger force was ambushed and all three Bns. were annihilated . Allen was wounded again at Femmina Morte at Cisterna. Darby’s last command was ‘fire all ammo’ then surrender. Allen was taken as a P.O.W. by the German’s and he escaped after 3 days in captivity. He crawled all night and slept during the days, to avoid the Germans. On 3 Feb. 1944, Allen was found by two soldiers from the 45th. I.D., where coincidently, Col. Darby was now a Bn. Commander. Allen said Darby showed great pleasure when the men brought one of his former Rangers to him. Allen was hospitalized, thus ending his Ranger duty. While recovering in the hospital, Allen was recognized by an Army Air Corp Officer, who read about the courageous performance through the Stars and Stripes newspaper. The officer asked are you one of them Rangers? Allen replied ‘Yes Sir! The officer then asked ‘Do you have a job when you leave here?’ Allen replied ‘Sir’ I’m pretty beat up from my service with the Rangers. Then the officer offered him a position in the 12th A.F., 57th. Bomb Wing. Allen served as a tail gunner for 24 missions on B-25 Mitchell Bombers, from June 1944 to March 1945 . Here is a list of all his awards. Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star w/ Oak Leaf, Purple Heart w/ 3 oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Army Good Conduct. European-African-Middle East Campaign w/ arrowhead and 3 star devices, WW2 Victory medal and Presidential Unit Citation w/oak leaf He passed away in 2018 and is interned at Bay Pines Memorial cemetery The Ike uniform I obtained from Allen was a reissue by the 75th Rangers at Ft. Benning for the for the 50th anniversary of Rangers He showed me his original issue 1st. Ranger Scroll, English made, A real thing of beauty. I created a Shadow box for his items for his Daughter. He was born in 1922, in Buffalo NY. Entered service in March 1942 after jump school w/ 82nd a/b , assigned to 509th AIB and shipped to England. A notice was posted about a new unit being formed. That unit was the 1st. Ranger Bn.
