I came across this jacket the other day and bought it - the price was right so what the heck.

But what exactly is it? At first glance I thought "M-41" - then no, not quite right... converted field jacket? No, too many buttons on the front. So a cut down 1940's Army overcoat then?? I think that may be what it is. There is a military looking spec or size tag in the neck / collar, or the remnants of one anyway, but too worn to read.

I am assuming a military coat cut down for more fashionable civilian use? Or has anyone seen anything like this "field done" or actually in military use?? I suspect done for a civilian. It's fairly well done, the only thing really done wrong I guess, would be the size of the belt loop on the middle of the back, the other two, on the sides, were left normal I guess.

Thoughts?? Thanks!

Looks like a cut-down Korean War-era field overcoat. The shade is hard to tell from the photos, but it could also be the post-Korea OG-107 version. Definitely appears to be one or the other.

I doubt it was done by a civilian..to much work when you can just buy what you want at the store. Its a different story when your over in another country. smile.gif

Yep

Cut down overcoat.Pretty common to do.sometimes done for a kid sometimes done by the vet to be more funtional when in civilian life.I had a WW2 USMC coat that had been cut down and had civilian buttons put on it.Guy said he didnt have a lot of money when he got out and needed a good coat.Spoke to another vet who gave his ikes to a local cop in 1948.The guy had them dyed black and wore them on duty according to the vet.I also have a WW2 officers over coat w/liner.Its an odd one.Has ghost image of pvt first class rank stripes and shoulder patch.Liner and jacket was shortened and it came in a lot of nurses uniforms.I assume the nurse had it and was shorter than the coat so had it cut to fit.
