I own an Underwood M1 Carbine, serial 2673265. While I am familiar with figuring out WHEN it was manufactured, I am more interested in finding out WHO it was issued to. Now, before I exercise my statutory rights in using FOIA to petition the Army to find the information for me, which is a waste of tax-payer resources, not to mention expensive for me in fees, I wanted to find out if there was already some kind of register or method already in existence to the public. How would I find out which military regiment, company, perhaps even squad or soldier my firearm was issued to in WW2? It would really be cool to establish the specific firearm's history, to see where it's been, what countries it invaded, what battles it's been in, etc. Any suggestions?
Basically you are out of luck. Your FOIA request will start from where the firearm was taken out of military storage and entered the civilian market.
For example last year I put in a FOIA request on a Thompson, this was done to verify its use by a particular police department and to see how many times it had been transferred in the civilian market before it came to me. The forms returned started with a list of the serial numbers of the twelve Thompsons in the case mine was taken from. All serial numbers but mine redacted. The only information other than serial number was the crate number the Thompsons were stored in.
The military does not keep the type information you are looking for on file for small arms. I wish they did. Enjoy the carbine, they are fun and affordable firearms to collect.
