All,

It went in the mail today! I have a guy that hits flea markets all over the south that finds "odds and ends" as he puts it. Recently, he acquired a named WW2 DSC for an unbelievable price for me. Last night on the phone, he gave me the name Wayne E. Boyce. Well, the first thing I did was go to DSC citations, and here is what came out of it......

*BOYCE, WAYNE E. (KIA)
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously)
to Wayne E. Boyce (0-1288690), First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with
military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 1st Special Service Force, in action
against enemy forces on 6 December 1943, on Mount La Difensa, Italy. First Lieutenant Boyce's platoon
was designated as the assault wave of his company for an attack on two fortified enemy ridge lines.
Immediately after starting the attack, the platoon encountered fierce machine gun, machine pistol,
and mortar fire, which halted the advance. First Lieutenant Boyce, however fearlessly moved forward,
and his action inspired his men to rush onward and assault the position. The first objective having
been taken, First Lieutenant Boyce immediately reorganized his unit and led the assault on the second
enemy line. Although wounded fatally in this assault, First Lieutenant Boyce devoted his remaining energy
to reorganizing his platoon and consolidating its position. His determined courage and aggressive leadership
are an everlasting inspiration to those who followed him in his heroic assaults against the enemy.
First Lieutenant Boyce's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his
life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit
upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Headquarters, Fifth U.S. Army, General Orders No. 8 (January 17, 1944)

Thats right!!!!!!! a FSSF KIA DSC! I'll post pics when it arrives (the guy I deal with doesn't have a computer). Talked to him this morning, and the guy that he got it from may also have the KIA Purple heart!

It went in the mail this morning, I'll scan and post pictures when it arrives. If I never find anything good again, that will be ok!!!!!

John

Does anyone know how many DSC's were awarded to the FSSF? Couldn't of been many, given the short time the outfit was in existance!
scottplen
can't wait to see it!!! Hope you find the PH thumbsup.gif
jjdevi1
Scott,

Me too. The guy that my guy got this from is an old time collector, doesn't own a computer, doesn't research anything, doesn't care about names. In fact, I might be able to trade him a WW2 boxed DSC for the heart if he has it. All this cost me was a WW1 12th Division tunic in a three way trade, so, needless to say, I'm pretty darned happy! It went in the mail today, so I'm starting to say "Is it there yet? Is it there yet!" LOL

From my guy's description on the phone, the engraving sounds good (he doesn't have a computer either!) Does anyone care to guess a ballpark figure on value? It isn't going anywhere, but want to add it to the insurance.

John
jjdevi1
Geez. I'm repeating myself! Giddy, and didn't sleep well! LOL

Thanks for the info, and, I've already sent off for his IDPF, and the medal isn't here yet!

From the First Special Service Force unit history, page 118.

"1st platoon, 5 company, leading the company's attack at this point in the pinned down stalemate, went forward in face of the fire following the example of Lieutenant Wayne Boyce, platoon leader. The platoon assault flanked and closed on three sides of the initial knob. Determination carried the position. Bayonets and grenades silenced the machine guns, snipers picked off the machine-pistol men. Still remaining was the final knob, whose defenders, perhaps a platoon, were unloading their remaining ammunition on the freshly taken objective. Lieutenant Boyce gained as much defilade as was necessary to reorganize, then again led his platoon on a full assault of the final knob, 200 yards down the slope guarding both sides of the critical saddle. Here the scrub cover ceased; it was slow advancing between the bare rock clumps. Casualties had already ebbed the platoon strength to half when three rounds hit Lieutenant Boyce. He remained in command directing his sections working the flanks and led the final charge onto the hump as his final act. Posthumous honors will never do full credit to Lieutenant Boyce's aggressive leadership."
jjdevi1
All,

Have found more about Boyce online. He was prior enlisted, having enlisted in 1940. Had one year of high school. Just goes to prove that education doesn't make leaders, determination, and sometimes just plain guts and the refusal to quit do. Amazing that the only thing about warfare that changes is the effectiveness with which we can kill each other. Leadership, courage, and the like have been the constants, ever since person A picked up a rock and hit person B with it. Personally, I would love to sit down with the good Lt.(who was right around my dad's age, and both were in Italy at roughly the same time, which is kinda creepy), and compare my war to theirs. Other than terrain and weapons, I'd bet the house that there wasn't a hell of a lot of difference. And, I'd bet we'd all agree that a lot of it was a waste of human potential, which in a lot of ways war is.

For those of you on the board that are to young to serve or didn't for whatever reason, take this away from the above. You don't do things like this for recognition, medals, or even your country. You do things like the above for each other. He was leading his family, and didn't want to let them down. Acquiring this medal and learning what I have so far, well, it just makes this old man remember, and kinda squishy inside.

There, I'm off the soapbox, and done thinking back,

John

John,

That is a outstanding find.I know I wouldnt be able to sleep waiting for that one to arrive.

Ron,

The bad thing is he won't send ANYTHING insured! So, I'm sweating right now! And, I should know tonight if the guy he got the DSC from has the matching heart!

Congratulations on this truly amazing find. thumbsup.gif Can't wait to see pictures. I'm glad something like this went to a person who is excited to get it and someone who will really take care of it.

Congratulations on a spectacular find!

It's great when history is preserved.

I'm looking forward to pics and to an update on the Purple Heart.

Congratulations!! I hope the PH follows and I can't wait to see photos!!

Awesome find, John! Congratulations! Find of the year? That has to be the find of a lifetime. I've never seen an FSSF DSC on the market. I can't wait to see the pictures.
jjdevi1
All,

Thanks! ne either on all accounts! Never seen one on the market, heck, I've never seen one! This is just one of those random things that happen I guess. The guy I got this from diesn't care about named medals at all, just is a type collector. If the heart comes out (and I should know today) all it is going to cost me is a minty WW2 Robbins DSC. The guy just wanted a replacement for the DSC that I'm getting! Amazing! And, I tried to tell them who Boyce is/was and it didn't mater one hoot. So, the end result is going to be Boyce is going to be living with a retired Army WO, as if being KIA weren't bad enough! LOL

laugh.gif I could think of worse fates for it!

Talk about a lucky find, even luckier since the guy couldn't care less that the recipient was FSSF. Mind if I borrow some of that luck for a bit? biggrin.gif

jjdevi1
Jeff,

I keep waiting tor the frozen chunk of feces to fall from the plane now and kill me. In the past month, here is wiat has happened:

Officially engraved DSM to MG Bryant Moore
Privately engraved PH to William W. Schultz Glider INF 17th ABN
Boyce DSC (and maybe KIA heart)

So, you're a married man now huh? Has the better half started to hint that maybe you don't need all this sfuff yet? LOL Mine has, and we're going on 40 years! LOL Yep, chunk of frozen feces, can see it coming! LOL

John

PS: PM me and I'll tell you what I paid for the three above.

Funny you should ask about my wife hinting at downsizing. Her parents are going to let me store my collection at their house until I finish "A" School next year (I'm having serious family issues at the moment). She even told me the other day she wants to take more interest in my hobby due to the afforementioned issues and now wears an anchor necklace!

As for the frozen feces, I suggest getting a steel reinforced umbrella. Or just wear a steel pot 24/7 for the rest of your life laugh.gif

Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? blink.gif
jjdevi1
All,

Here is latest on this (stay tuned for updates at 15 and on the hour)! LOL To the "Is it there yet?" crowd (me included) nope, most likely tomorrow or Sat. When it gets here I'll post scans. BTW, operating hours to see it will be normally 9-5 or until my wife throws it, me, and all this other "stuff" (insert wife rolling eyes here) to the curb! LOL Admission will be a six pack, which you'll have to dring yourself, since I'm now diabetic. To the "Did the guy find the matching heart" crowd (me included) the short answer is not yet, but he has a couple of others packed away, so we need a collective crossing of the fingers here.

So, for the bottom line folks, it ain't here yet, and the heart is still a maybe.

Can't wait to see it! I may have to sneak away from family this weekend (parents get into town tomorrow night) and get up your way for a bit!

scottplen
John I see the wait is killing you !!!! SO Being the nice guy I am you better get the guy to send it to Me !!! rolleyes.gif I am only concerned for your health ~~~

I can't wait to see pics !!! hope you get the heart!!! thumbsup.gif

Have you picked up a Tuskegee DFC since this thread started or what?...some peoples luck tongue.gif
jjdevi1
I fugure something off of the Darwin award list is next up for me! Oh, wait, I already had 27 1/2 years in the Army, so, that took care of the Darwin thing! LOL

Seriously, I have several people that look for stuff for me. I can go months without anything, but it seems like about once a year or so, something really good comes in. This has been the best short period EVER though. In the past month:

17th ABN Glider KIA heart (there is a thread on him under research)
Officially Engraved DSM to MGEN Bryant Moore (here under the medals)
Now, this, and maybe the KIA heart to go with it. And, I have a trade in the works for two African American KIA hearts. Now, I'll most likely go 5 years without anything big. My wife says that I'm headed down the road to being a dealer, the problem is, I'm a collector/historian and researcher first.

John
jjdevi1
Well, I'm busy rounding up stuff on him, and already put in for the IDPF, which I seem to get back in about 3 weeks. Then again, it's the only time I use the retired WO thing! LOL Don't know if it makes a difference or not.

Speaking of our good Lt. here, does anyone have any ideas on where I could get a pic of him? Also, how difficult is a legit FSSF SSI to come up with, and will it cost me a kidney? LOL

Thanks,

John
Will
Legitimate, WW II FSSF SSI are not rare, but they are desirable and popular, so the prices are higher than most other US-made patches from the period. At least in my experience in this area (eastern Pennsylvania, where there are a lot of veterans, and a lot of flea markets), the highest priced American made SSI are 101st Airborne (thank you, "Band of Brothers"!), followed by the Ranger units and, along with them, the First Special Service Force.

I have seen legitimate FSSF SSI selling around here for between $60 and $90.
jjdevi1
Will,

Thanks for the info. Now, I have to get photos of a legit one to know what to look for. I've never been a WW2 patch guy, so what I know about them fits on the head of a pin.

Thanks,

John

Hey John !

Can't wait for the pics...of course, a posthumous WWII DSC should be officially hand engraved as issued to the NOK. I've seen a handful of them over the years and they pop up every so often. I don't know how many posthumous DSCs were issued to FSSF soldiers but its got to be fairly a low number. I happen to have a posthumous WWII DSC/PH pair to a 503rd PIR paratrooper. Now...Korean and Vietnam War DSCs are even more rare. I've got a Korean War posthumous DSC group but still looking for a Vietnam one.

BTW - Sounds like you'll have enough "profit margin" built into the DSC to buy a FSSF SSI...maybe even a couple boxes of em !! w00t.gif

Vic
jjdevi1
Vic,

I reckon so! This came totally out of left field, and by next week, I should know if the guy has his heart as well. I told my guy over the phone to describe the engraving, and from his description, it sounds 100% ok. Funny thing is, he wanted to polish it for me! LOL I almost had the big one right then and there!

My problem with patches is that I'm not a patch guy at all, so unless it comes from a source that I trust, I'm going to wait and learn. From the research that I've initially done, Boyce was 1 of 2 KIA DSC's from the Force. Now, I just have to find the other one to complete the set! RLMAO! There were a grand total of 8 DSC's from the Force.

Any forum members have a SSI they're willing to part with for John?

NEWS UPDATE: Just called the better half and the mailman hasn't come today. If it comes today, I'll scan it right away if it's there, when I get home from work that is! The better half has threatened to hide the envelope from me. If this happens, instead of looking for a FSSF SSI, I'll be looking for quicklime and a couple of hogs! LOL She's already cranky about having to sleep on the couch once it arrives...........

John
jjdevi1
News flash! Either the better half is messing with me (and after 39 years who could blame her?) but said the envelope didn't come today. So, maybe tomorrow, then again, she could be running a PSYOP on me! LOL

John
jjdevi1
Well, Boyce made it a-ok!!!!!! I feel better! I should know if the guy has the PH by Monday.

John,
I bet your a happy man(I would be)The only named Force medal I have is a good conduct to a small group I have from AL Smith.Hope you get the heart. For a Force collector is doesnt get much better than this. thumbsup.gif
jjdevi1
Ron,

This is my first (and so far) only Force piece. My dad's sister dated a guy who was in the Force by the last name of Moss. Funny, but my father and he ran into each other in Italy, when my father was detatched for a time from the 82nd. I'd love to find out more about Moss too!

John
ItemCo16527
w00t.gif WOW! I'm really glad it finally arrived, and that your wife wasn't pulling a prank on you and hiding it, John. That is a beautiful DSC, and one of the rarest many of us will probably ever see. Outstanding! thumbsup.gif

I know little to nothing about FSSF, but even I know you got something special!!
jjdevi1
I think so! It is one of two KIA DSC's to a Force member, the other being Canadian. If I could have one DSC, this one would most likely be it! As rare as airborne WW2 DSC's are, well, to me anyway, this one takes the cake!

Got my fingers crossed for you to get that Heart thumbsup.gif :

And for what it is, most likely the cheapest too!!!!

John
jjdevi1
Well, it was a bad news day that ended good. No Boyce PH, that goes to the top of my "to find" list. However the guy hand an engraved Navy PH that he let go cheap! So, it wasn't a total loss!

Hi John,..I'm a fanatical FSSF collector so although I envy your rare find I also send you my congratulations. As for a photograph of W.E. Boyce 5th company 2nd regiment here you go

jjdevi1
Thanks tons for the photo! He has that kind of Audie Murphy look! After reading his citation, I wonder why it wasnn't a Medal of Honor. This DSC was just "ome of those things" that come out every so often. This is my only FSSF piece that I've found in 50 years of doing this.
