At the 37th Division reunion this week end I had a 148th vet ask me how he might find a copy of his recommendation for his Silver Star for actions on New Georgia.
I thought I might have the General Orders number in a book I have, but crapped out!
Anyone know where I might find a copy for him?
Thanks for any and all help.

His last name is Smith, and amongst all of them, he wasn't one. Will call him tonight to see if he has his Discharge paper.
Thanks
Anyone else here that might help?

OK everyone, still no info. I'm looking for a Maurice Smith, 148th Infantry, 37th Div. He was awarded the Silver Star for actions on Hill 700, Bougainville, 1943-44.
Can anyone out there help.
PS- This info is for him. He told me he was interested in reading the original commendation for it .

This is a real long shot, but if the original recommendation exists, it might be in 37th ID files at the NARA records center in Maryland (there is an on-line query system for requesting these records). It won't be in the veteran's OMPF (aka: pile of ashes) at St. Louis. I searched high and low once for Silver Star docs. on a 43rd ID KIA. The orders, with citation, were in Maryland and I found plenty in his IDPF, including eyewitness statements, but no copy of the original recommendation anywhere.

Recommendations are relatively difficult to find, as they were not archived records. In modern times, recommendations are filed for a year and destroyed at the end of the year following their creation. The orders were archived and citations generally went into the 201 file. All of this, of course, depended upon the whim of the G-1 clerks. Lazy clerk = fewer files stored and archived.
