Hello, I'm looking for opinions on the collar disc. To me they do not look like the issue type, so then, what type are they?
Thanks ,
Rod

Rod, saw those pop-up this morning - they look good to me (great pic's from intelligent seller), I have no issues at all with them (and the rollers are good too). My 2 cents. s/f Darrell

Thanks Darrell,
For the sake of enhancing my knowledge, I have a few more questions. looking at the back of the disc they look American made, but when I look at the front I thought that the continents should have more stimpeling (best word that I can think of) detail to them.
Would these be the army/navy store variety?
Thanks, S/F

Rod, these are the issue type. They have only the latitude lines. Longitude lines are also incorporated in the Army/Navy store types. Re the very small stempling lines that run perpendicular to the latitude - they appear to show in this picture adjacent the south hemisphere on the disc being held. You will also note the disc's have been painted at some time (that is revealed by the excess paint on the anchor of the other disc). And this painting does not appear to my eye as it was done yesterday - last week sort of thing. Most likely a long time ago given the type and extent of wear. And likely done by the Vet himself for a reunion or parade - but there is now way of knowing for sure. s/f Darrell

Darrell,
Thanks for the info on the collar disc. The information is a huge help. I have seen alot of fake ones over the years, but very few good ones. So with the lack of handling good ones I tend to be a little gun shy. Especially with the current prices.

What is the earliest documentation anyone has in regards to EM collar EGAs during WWI? I have acquired a QM SGTs Uniform Regs compilation of changes and includes some interesting additions to timeframe of approval of collar insignia for EMs.

Alec, no doubt the QM folks were involved in requesting samples for approval / use. Aside from the uniforms reg changes, the paperwork preparing for the changes would be the only clues establishing a time-frame prior to implementation. An interesting question, what do you have? Can you scan and post? s/f Darrell

A price list that I believe is dated Jan 1918 (or 1919 it is not in front of me right now) and lists collar devices. Since Officer's purchased their own I would assume it is EM collar devices. Also lists costs for cap devices as well.
I will photo the document and post later this evening as it is in a bound book that I would have to tear apart. A lot of unseen info in this compilation. I also have annual reports of the Corps from 1860s forward which list interesting info from changes in helmets and clothing to adoption of dog tags etc and manufacture of tents.

Marine Corps Price List of Clothing, Etc. dated Dec 9, 1918
"Prices at which articles of clothing will be issued to enlisted men of the Marine Corps on and after Jan 1, 1919, etc."
What other collar devices could these be for EMs, maybe Lyres... would these have been bronze?

As Chris indicated with his pictures... this price list could be for collar disc's as well. Sadly the price list is not specific, thus lends itself to more conjecture than factual in identification. Collar emblems were not authorized until Feb 1920 and it safe to presume that the problems of coverting from standing collars to rolled collars likley delayed their use even further as evidenced by the number of converted uniforms we see. Let me also point out, this
was not the first time enlisted Marine wore collar emblems. Members of the Band were authorized to wear "Corps collar devices" from 1892 - 1900.
