Does anyone know of any dealers in New York City? I will be visiting in June with my girl friend and wouldn't mind taking a de-tour from all the sight-seeing thumbsup.gif

I thought I'd already seen a thread regarding this but couldn't locate it.

Would love any help.

Thanks,

Will

Sorry to inform you, don't think there are anymore dealers in NYC, most left in the early 90s. I think Kaufmans is still around on the West side and I don't think they have real collectables anymore. Maybe someone knows something I dont, I'd like to know as well.
Andrei
You have Sparr Militaria in Queens. Near the corner of B'way and Steinway (B'way Astoria or Steinway stops). And I think thats it...
Kaufman's is an average Army and Navy but sometimes a vintage item pops up from behind Jim's counter.

Check "No Relations" at 204 1st. Ave (between 12th St & 13th St). This is trendy vintage thrift store and every time I am in New York, I found something overthere.
IMHO, Vintage clothing stores are the last hope as far as militaria collecting for New York City.

Ok, thanks for the help Andrei and normaninvasion. I looked up Kaufman's, we're staying on the west side so I think I'll take a look and see whats about. Vintage stores sounds like a good bet, I always enjoy looking in them anyway!

On the subject of NYC, could anyone recommend sites of historic interest worth visiting?

Thanks.

I was just up at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island last Tuesday, that was neat.

Central Park, Ellis Island, World Trade center site, Metropolitan museum of art, natural history museum, south street sea port. If you get a chance to go to Brooklyn, go visit the old navy yard.

Hello, The USS Intrepid museum is good, it's an essex class carrier that fought in WW2 and Vietnam. Also about 1 1/2 hours from the city is Westpoint, great military museum there. Well worth the effort to see, the Metropolitan museum of art has a nice antique arms and armor section.

Thanks Mike, normaninvasion and Corpl. Cleaver. I managed the Met, Staten Island Ferry, Nat. History Museum and a few other touristy things the last time I was over smile.gif

I should get chance to do some more exploring this time. The intrepid would be great, is it easy to get over there? South Street Seaport is on the list and Brooklyn Naval yard would also be a good one. Is that far away from Manhattan?

Last question for tonight, how difficult is it to get to West Point? I'll bet my girl friend would love it wink.gif

Thanks for all the help.

The Intrepid is on the Hudson River, west side of the city, real easy to get to. Brooklyn Navy Yard is just a subway ride away, maybe 1/2 hr ride from where you are. Alot of it was abandoned, you should research it on the web and see whats the digs there. As Mike said, Westpoint is 1-1/2hrs away, check their website, maybe theres a tour bus from the city going there. If you have the time, Westpoint would be a +. Good luck

Thanks again normaninvasion. I just googled West Point and the Navy Yard, looks to be some nice abandoned quarters and old buildings around. Should make for some good photography. Not found a way to get to the Point just yet, but it sure does look beautiful there smile.gif

Many thanks and best wishes.

There's a store on Canal street, about 2 blocks east of W.Broadway called Church Street Surplus.

Address is 327 Church st. (212)-226-5280

http://www.yelp.com/biz/church-street-surplus-new-york

If you remember the old Canal Street surplus it is diagonally across from it. They have all manner of vintage clothing from hippie stuff and varsity jackets to M1938 Mackinaws and Horsehide A-2's. I was there a while back and they had US Mountain parkas with fur trim reversible parkas etc.

Other than that, there's Sparrs, but they're pretty weird in there.

Thanks for the info, I'll be in that area anyway so shouldn't be much of a detour!

Thanks again to all contributors.

Yes, You can finally answer the age old question "Who is buried in Grants tomb". Just google grants tomb and it will supply you with all the info you need. It is not very far from where you are staying. Have a great time.

My 2 cents worth is make sure you go to the New York Transit museum in Brooklyn (and to tie it to military collectibles :-) there's a large photo of a WAC going through an old turnstile ). While you're down that way you could go see what's left of Coney Island (not much I understand).

If you google short line bus, west point. You should get the schedule for trips to Westpoint. They offer daily trips that begin at 8:30 AM-5:00PM. They begin at the Port Authority bus terminal in midtown. Easy enough to do if you don't mind making it a day trip.

The West Point museum is supposed to be excellent. I'm hoping I'll get a chance to see it myself this summer while I'm up there, but I doubt it.
