Full Version: USMC OD ("khaki") Shelter Half

I just got this in today from an ebay auction. Looks unissued but I won't call it "mint" due to it have several small stains from storage. But the canvas is crisp and new looking. Made in the typical light OD of the period and retains the white label marked: "SHELTER HALF / Contract Nom 47324 / POWERS & CO. 1945".
No markings identifying it USMC other than the contract and it's made to the Marine Corps specs for shelter halfs which was different from the Army tents. But I don't think the seller knew it was USMC and so it sold for low money.

Greg, Thanks for posting this. What are the differences between the Army and the Marine shelter halves?

1. USMC tents had (2) grommets per tent stake rope....Army tents had (1)

2. USMC tents had (2) grommets at each end, one for the pole and the other to tie the guy line. Army tents had (1) grommet at this location and a web loop to attach the guy line.

3. USMC tents had web loops along the side that has the buttons. This was for the blanket roll straps when the tent, blanket, and tent accessories were rolled up for attachment to the pack.

3. I _think_ the Marines went to the double end tents sooner than the Army but I can't document this.

Then you have the obvious differences such as manufacture of camouflage pattern tents. Far as I know, the Army stuck with OD color shades.

By 1953, the USMC had dropped features #1 and #3 with their Mitchell pattern camouflage shelter halfs.
