It's been under construction now for about 2 years. Getting close to the finish line now. Paint the walls and ceiling this weekend. Then lay the carpet, install the lights, and start setting up my own museum. Man, I can't hardly wait to unpack those boxes!
This is the upstairs.

Hah, only joking. Your one lucky devil to have your own building to display your collection, I would personally move into it and live with my collection.

robinb:
So, what are your long term plans? Will you open your collection up to the public? If you plan on doing so, how do you envision making it happen? How do you manage your collection inventory and aquisitions? Do you have some specific collection goals in mind; what are they? You said that your facility has been under construction for two years now. When did you make the decision to expand into a purpose built location? Would you share a little about how long you've been collecting and how your collecting efforts evolved to where you are today?
I know that all sounds like an interogation; I don't intend it to be. I would just really like to hear more about your ideas and plans. It always nice to see success in action, and yours is an example that I'm sure we can all learn something from. Even if I never build my collection to the scale that you're achieving, it's inspiring to see what is possible.
So, please, tell us more.

Any chance of pictures of the outside of the building?
Out of curiosity - how much does something like this cost to build?

hi robinb, Nice museum buildings you have there, I see the Dodge weapons carrier from the rear, however I am intrigued by the closed cab vehicle in front of it, are we looking at a Dodge half ton pick up, I can't quite see enough of it to be sure what it is, maybe a Dodge half ton carryall

??????

If it is either of the two vehicles mentioned above, then these are firm favourites of mine, along with the long wheel base closed cab GMC.

Hi robinb, thanks for the info on the Chevy truck, I had a fifth wheel version of the Chevy truck, the guy I sold it to replaced the fifth wheel for a bomb hoist and marked it up USN torpedo loader.

yeah, Obama's in, I want that thing there and that one over there and oh yes got to have the one in the corner. But that AK there I can't get that, Obama gonna take that one away. I don't have any of that, it's not fair, you know, that you have so much and an underprivileged person like me has so little, President Obama will send some of that my way.

Great stuff you have there!

I had the building set up by a construction company. I built the second floor, did all of the insulating, wiring, and heating system. There is 5200 square feet of display area, about 1/2 of it will be heated and carpeted.
I plan of setting up everything that I can on mannikins. I have about 60' of glass display cases. I'll put up shelving where possible. There is a lot of work to do yet.
My collection is primarily US from 1903-1945. Everything from insignia to vehicles. 37 years of collecting and a guy can accumulate a lot of stuff.
It's hard to tell if there is even enough room to display it all. I've never seen my whole collection at once. Each section of the rooms will be dedicated to a branch of service. Medical, Engineer, Infantry, Artillery, and so on.
It won't be open to the public, but by appointment only. So...if you're in Oregon someday, and have some time to kill......

That is amazing that you will be able to display your collection in such a way. The University Museum that I am associated with has nearly 200,000 pieces and a mere 800 sq/ft of display space. The institution doesn't seem to think the students actually need to see or even know that we have a collection. What we wouldn't give for a building like that!

Man that is awesome, I am in the process of doing the same thing kinda. Since I only collect Army Air Corps, I am actually having a hangar built to display all of my items along with my P-38, P-47's (razorback and bubbletop, ya know to be able to compare side by side), and my P-51. I also have a Japanese Val and an ME-109 but since this is just a US forum Im not going to go in depth about those....................................................(A man can dream, right?)

M1903 rifles are one of my favorites. I started collecting them by year of manufacture. Going from memory, 1907, 1912, 1914, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1928, 1932, 1937, 1941, 1942, 1943. Probably skipped one or two, but you get the idea.

I agree with your summation, assuming that your putting all this stuff into the 2500 sq.ft. that your heating and carpeting, you probably should start planning the expansion project now.
