I've recently been asked by some collectors as to what the best way is to display helmets. As I looked through my War Room, I can see that I've implemented 5 different ways of displaying helmets myself. So, here are a few ideas that I have and I'm sure many of you have other great ideas so, please feel free to post your comments, ideas, and critiques here. First up is a combination of displays.

1) The glass display case to eliminate dust. Clue: it doesn't work! Those little dust guys still find their way into the cabinet but, it does slow the process.

2) A wooden display stand within the confines of the afore mentioned "somewhat" dust proof cabinet.

3) A wooden plate holder, bought from Hobby Lobby, to hold the M-1917 helmet so as to properly display the painted top.

Next up...

1) Again the glass display case with no helmet stands, only sitting flat on the glass shelf

2) The Mannequin display

3) Another plate holder bought from Hobby Lobby, this time a wire one, for displaying Camo'd M1917's

Finally, the traditional, catch the dust and sit flat on the open shelf display for the M-1917's combined with the wooden display stand for the M-1's

Good topic about preservation ! I use different methode to display my helmets, and it's depend essentially of the type of liner and chinstrap !
If it's a 3 points chinstrap, I prefer to display on a tube (made of a carton tube, a bottle, shells... etc), if the liner is made of leather, I prefer to put in a foam block...

For the cleaning, I use simply a duster... And sorry, I've not only US helmets

I also display a few different ways. I hate to dust as well, so most of my items are behind some type of glass / plexiglass.

Example 1: I sometimes display helmets with other items to show context. This is a desert storm display. For these, I use plexiglass cases that are normally used to display football helmets. They're also stackable.

Example 2 is also a "context" display. I like to display my WWI helmets with my WWI uniforms. I have a large case that stores both behind glass. The uniforms hang below .... helmets sit on shelving above. This is a picture of a third of a case.

Example 3 is just helmets. I have a few of these cases, made from cheap shelving units from Menards. I paint them to match the wall color, then add mirror clips and glass to keep the dust out.

From Ebay .... bought them by the case, which made them very affordable.

You'll see dealers with a "buy it now" that also offer free shipping, when you buy them by the case.

I prefer to display mine so that the liners are visible, propped up with other related items. I use a similar, though sturdier display technique when I set up at a show. I took some plastic bowls that I purchased at a dollar store and painted them blck before mounting them on a plywood sheet. you can set the helmets in the bowls, liner side up and people can see the liners without picking them up. I have found over the years that if I display the helmets metal side up, folks will reach and grab them by the brim and if a chin strap is wrapped over the brim, it can be damaged or broken. I use this display every year at the Show of Shows. I will try to locate a picture pf the display stand later.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on a lighting system to highlight the helmets in the cases or on the shelves ?? :think:

Down here in the south, there were a lot of old textile mills. I just use some of the large thread spools for stands and they just sit on built in shelfs.
