Pmuranyi Posted July 3, 2009 #1 Posted July 3, 2009 HI I am an historian of the battle of midway. As a re-enactor it is my main impression. Worked very hard to get the outfit perfect down to the "T". I decided to go to amazon and look for books a while back on Midway. I found Geogre Gays book,"Sole Survivor". Well, when it arrived I was happy. I opened the book and I almost fell over on the floor. IT HAD HIS AUTOGRAPH IN IT!!!!! I almost felt his sole pass trough me! I was so thankful for his work and dedication to that battle that now the book is one of my most pride possessions. Ya never know what you may find in your hunt !!! Paul

I have a flight log book of an AOM 3/C who flew with VT-8 before Midway, but was transferred out about a week before the battle to attend radioman's school. There are several entries where he flew with George Gay on patrols and bombing practices. He returned later in June and fought with the squadron at Guadacanal. Quite an interesting and historical log book to read.
rice paddy daddy Posted December 18, 2009 #3 Posted December 18, 2009 I met George Gay at an airshow where he was autographing his book. Of course, I bought one.
Bellumbill Posted December 20, 2009 #4 Posted December 20, 2009 I met George Gay at an airshow where he was autographing his book. Of course, I bought one. Back in the 1980s my father was Commissioner of Aviation for the City of Chicago. As such, he was always meeting with various heads of different airlines - At that time, Mr. Gay was working in some capacity for Flying Tigers Airline, which was a transport carrier, and my father met with him. Knowing I was a WWII buff, my father wisely got me a autographed copy of "Sole Survivor". After I finished the book I then sent Mr. Gay a letter with some questions and received a letter back from him! So, not only do I have an autographed copy of the book I also have a personally addressed and signed letter from Mr. Gay. I consider it a real treasure. As an aside, some years ago Manion's International Auction House was auctioning off a set of Mr. Gay's dress whites - I tried hard to win, but didn't have a ton of money to throw at it as was outbid. Would have looked good next to my book and letter, oh well! Best to all! Bill K.
Francis Marion Posted December 21, 2009 #5 Posted December 21, 2009 George Gay was a good man. I had the pleasure to meet him in my youth and heard his story from him first hand. He gave me an autographed model decal set with his aircraft markings that I still have stashed away somewhere.
