343rd Infantry Regiment DUI

The real beauty of the purchase is that the reason I have been looking for this DUI for so long is that this is the regiment my grandfather served in during World War II. Several years ago I put together a shadowbox of his medals, badges, SSI's and rank insignia from his WWII service plus 27 years in the Georgia National Guard and Army Reserve. I was able to find all of the other insignia but I was never able to locate a 343rd DUI or if I did find one on e-Bay it always sold for a really high price. Anyway, regardless of the rarity of this particular DUI I can finally add it to the shadowbox. Unfortunately, my grandfather won't see it since he passed away last year. However, I have the shadowbox at my house and I plan to display it along with the flag presented at his funeral.
By the way, I always thought my grandfather's national guard service was interesting. He enlisted in 1952 and because of his WWII service he went in as a sergeant and within about six months he was commissioned. Originally, his unit was infantry (121st of the 48th Infantry Division). When the 48th was reorganized as the 48th Armored Division, his unit was redesignated the 162nd Tank Battalion. Finally, a few years later, the unit was redesignated as the 560th Engineer Battalion. Ironically, he was never really transferred between units. Instead, the units were simply redesignated and whoever happened to be serving at the time was simply retrained in a new MOS. Thus my grandfather served as an infantry platoon leader, a tank platoon leader and an engineer platoon leader and company commander while serving with basically the same group of guys all from the same small town in Georgia for most of his career.

ASMIC Infantry catalog (Vol. 3, 12/87) shows one entry for 434th Infantry: #434A, 29x23-mm, hallmarked Whitehead and Hoge, authorized 1926, samples approved 1927. Capistrano has a color illustration of this DI (Distinctive Insignia of the United States Army 1939 -- 1946). He cites the same basic specs. as ASMIC but adds that a pinback fastener is used. Evidently, you have found an uncataloged variant....I just won this item on e-Bay and wondered what everyone thinks....The listing says that it is clutch back with no hallmark. And I only paid $8.50 for it....

Is your reference to the 434th Infantry a typo? This is a 343rd Infantry DUI. Either way, I appreciate the input.ASMIC Infantry catalog (Vol. 3, 12/87) shows one entry for 434th Infantry: #434A, 29x23-mm, hallmarked Whitehead and Hoge, authorized 1926, samples approved 1927. Yes, your ID is correct and my ID is a typo: Your DI is 343th Infantry and the material in my original post (#2) pertains to 343th Infantry. I can't edit post #2 now but the only ASMIC catalog number 343th Infantry is 343A (and for the record, ASMIC Infantry catalog does not contain an entry for a unit designated "434th Infantry"). I regret being a source of confusion on this excellent forum....Is your reference to the 434th Infantry a typo? This is a 343rd Infantry DUI....

Thanks for the info. As I said, the real reason I have been looking for one of these is to add to my grandfather's display so the fact that it might be a restrike doesn't really matter to me. However, I was a little suspicious that I got it for so little since I have seen others, apparently original, go for over $100 when they occasionally show up on e-Bay. So I am happy with the purchase no matter what. By the way, is there a commercial source for these restrikes? I have never been able to find one anywhere online. It's a restrike made for collectors. The blue is the incorrect chip color and the lion should be tr yellow. However, the originals are very scarce and very expensive.
