AirMechanic Posted May 11, 2011 #1 Posted May 11, 2011 What is the best way to clean and preserve the rubber parts and hose of a WWII gas mask?
Hitman_one Posted May 11, 2011 #2 Posted May 11, 2011 I cant talk for everyone else but in the past with my masks ive given the face pieces a clean using warm water and a soft scouring pad and then letting it air dry.For long term storage i stuff the face piece with paper and dust the inside and outside with french chalk.(not sure what its called in the states) Its easy to wipe it off with a damp cloth too. I also keep the masks away from extremes of temperature and direct sunlight. If displaying i try not to put any strain on the hose by supporting the filter and the head elastic. As for ww1 masks?I try not to even breathe on the thing!! :crying:
BOLO Posted May 11, 2011 #3 Posted May 11, 2011 I store mine inside a large GI ammo can , it keeps it sealed and protected from heat & humidity , these are air tight proper storage conditions will help preserve your mask http://www.armynavysuperstores.com/20mm-ammo-cans.jpg
Linedoggie Posted May 16, 2011 #4 Posted May 16, 2011 Am I wrong in thinking that up to WWII Asbestos in White and Blue fiber was used in Mask filters? or was that just UK and European masks?
Hitman_one Posted May 16, 2011 #5 Posted May 16, 2011 No.Both were used in Brit and some European masks..Im not sure about US masks?I thinks its just activated charcoal? Link here: http://warrelics.eu/forum/equipment-field-...asbestos-42894/
