What is the best way to clean and preserve the rubber parts and hose of a WWII gas mask?

I cant talk for everyone else but in the past with my masks ive given the face pieces a clean using warm water and a soft scouring pad and then letting it air dry.For long term storage i stuff the face piece with paper and dust the inside and outside with french chalk.(not sure what its called in the states)

Its easy to wipe it off with a damp cloth too.

I also keep the masks away from extremes of temperature and direct sunlight. If displaying i try not to put any strain on the hose by supporting the filter and the head elastic.

As for ww1 masks?I try not to even breathe on the thing!! :crying:

Am I wrong in thinking that up to WWII Asbestos in White and Blue fiber was used in Mask filters? or was that just UK and European masks?
