ROCKET Posted November 6, 2009 #1 Posted November 6, 2009 WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine), Jim Webb (D-Va.), Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), and Mary Landrieu (D-La.) today introduced the Cold War Service Medals Act of 2009, bipartisan legislation to authorize the secretaries of the military departments to award Cold War Service Medals to American veterans. To date, no medal exists to honor the men and women who served and defended the United States during the Cold War. For over a decade Cold War Vets have been fighting for the creation and authorization of a Cold War Service Medal to honor their service. Over the years legislation has been introduced in Congress only for it to be later stripped out in conference committee. November 9th of this year marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. We are hoping that this legislation will finally become reality so that all Cold War Vets can receive the proper recognition they deserve. Please contact your Senators and ask them to support this bill (S.2743) and to consider becoming a co-sponsor as well. It already has bipartisan support. Thanks in advance for all of your help! John
Salvage Sailor Posted November 9, 2009 #2 Posted November 9, 2009 We already have Cold War Recognition Certificates that were authorized in 1999. Mine hangs next to my other award certificates & discharge. Personally, I don't need a gedunk medal to prove I was there. Cold War Recognition Certificate

Cold War Recognition Certificate Ya, but remember that for enlisted guys that are still in, it means promotion points, so by helping with this, you are helping your bretheren
ROCKET Posted November 9, 2009 Author #4 Posted November 9, 2009 With all due respect the Cold War Certificate was a cop-out by DOD because the original wording of the legislation did not force DOD to issue the medal. I also received my certificate and it's rather bland and pathetic. I've also heard that it is no longer even being given out anymore so for those Cold War Vets that didn't know about it...they're out of luck. I just found out that a campanion bill was introduced into the house on November 6th by New York Representative Steve Israel (NY-2). The bill is H.R. 4051 and it reads: "To amend 10, United States Code to provide for the award of a military service medal to members of the Armed Forces who served honorably during the Cold War, and for other purposes." I'd like to ask folks to please contact their congressman and ask them to co-sponsor and support this bill (H.R. 4051) in Congress. Thanks! John
mmerc20 Posted November 13, 2009 #5 Posted November 13, 2009 Hawkdriver- It's not that I'm saying a commerative medal such as this isn't important, but don't you think though that any enlisted that were serving 20 years ago are really worried about promotion points anymore? Mike
