Greetings, I hope this message reaches the right people, I had a question cross my mind the last several days regarding some research I had conducted a couple of years ago. Hoping that someone here might know where something like this exists. As some members here on the site are aware, I came into possession of a scarce WWI officer's uniform identified to a First Lieutenant in Company F of the 369th "Harlem Helfighter" Infantry Regiment. Attached here is a link to a comment I made covering the coat: Something I have had a very hard time tracking down in the case of this officer is a clearer period photo of him, preferably in uniform. When I first picked up the set I hounded for several weeks to see if I could find a photo of this gent and came up with a very grainy photo from Oak Park IL where Otto Arnston (the officer in question) was adjutant of the American Legion Post there: My question is this. Are there any other sources for period photos of the 369th Infantry before/during/after WWI? I reached out to both the armory in Harlem and the NY state military museum and both were unable to help due to Otto having been an Illinois resident. I also have reached out to his family several times but have gotten very little to no response back so I doubt they would have anything helpful. The book From Harlem to the Rhine also has a plethora of great photos but none seem to be identified to anyone in particular with the exception of more prominent members of the regiment. Thanks for reading through my inquiry and if anyone has any input as to where I should search please let me know! I seem to recall seeing a yardlong at one point online depicting one of the Companies in the 369th immediately post-war but I have no clue where that image would have been sourced from. Hope everyone has a great rest of your week! Best Regards, -J.D.

Were you with the 48th Highlanders? They made a unit purchase of M1956 ammunition pouches at some point.

The canteen carrier is most likely Canadian, with the front closure as used previously on the P08 and P19 webbing. Officially it was adopted again in 1942, so if yours is dated 1941 it's either a really early one or maybe from a British manufacturer that for whatever reason used the older pattern. British webbing is a world on its own 😊 What are the markings of helmet shell and liner?

The carburettor looks to be a Solex? The engine might be a standard light truck engine, maybe from Dodge so you could see if there are any casted partsnumbers on it. Have a look around on https://forums.g503.com if you haven't already. -

I do love the style of these caps. In a recent trip to Portland I found two in the same shop. Paid up just a little , but when you like something ... The LT cap had been "crushed" and it takes some wadded up newspaper to make it stand up. Both are from the Louisville Cap Company.

I don’t think it is a Civil War period military button. Possibly a civilian flat button but I think it is later. -

This was found on etsy by another member and linked in an unrelated to Uniforms topic on a Helmet Decal of the 60s, I IDed as as one of those Training Brigade insignias seen as local approved DIs and Helmet Liner Decals in the 60s, possibly at Polk. Said Topic stated by Bill the Patch https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/394082-vietnam-era-insignia-sticker-unknown/#comment-3066104 This more than likely is a PT Sweatshirt for this 5th Training Brigade. So lets Save it for future references -

So jumping back to this inquiry, I had the same question and reached back out to the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum on Camp Dodge about the coats. I was curious if any were IDed. The following was provided curtesy of The Iowa Gold Star Military Museum Camp Dodge, IA: Far Left Uniform: Identified to a Pvt. Raymond G. Anderson (#4819940) of Company G, 88th Infantry Regiment of the 19th Division. Honorably discharged May 1st 1919. Middle Uniform: Unidentified Far Right Uniform (tree patch): Identified to Pvt. 1st Cl. Albert W. Bollhoefer (#4817131) of Company B, 87th Infantry Regiment of the 19th Division. Honorable discharge September 30th 1919. Here are the two men's service cards as follows in order: Now what is unusual about the coat attributed to Pvt. Bollhoefer with the tree patch, it is an officer's coat with a 1st Sergeant's rank on the right sleeve. Unsure if there is more to the story than meets the eye and what I am able to see/have been told, but an intriguing patch for sure. Would be interested in hearing input from other members here on this site. Best Regards, -J.D. -
Certainly for the Link/Amcraft wings, the salesman samples are logical origins. I lean away from the gold finished wings (other than pilot wings) being intended for instructors. I am only aware of civilians being used as pilot instructors, not observer, airship pilot or aerial gunner instructors. Another possibility for the gold finished wings are sweetheart pieces. I also wonder if the gold finish might have anything to do with "gold star" relatives wanting something that would reflect their lost loved-ones service.
