This came in a box lot from an auction my buddy went to.

 

Can anyone tell me if this is WW2 period and what it was awarded for... ???

It is one of the distinctive items authorized for infantrymen. This includes both those serving in an infantry billet and those who have graduated from an infantry MOS school. the other items authorized are blue plasic discs that go behind the visor hat badge and the lapel "US" and Infantry insignias. These were not worn till post WWII.
