This rack probably dates from sometime in the 1980's thru the 1990's:

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7840/usafribbonsxj4.jpg

The ribbons:

01 - Air Force Commendation Medal (Est 1958) - Criteria: Outstanding achievement or meritorious service rendered on behalf of the US Air Force.
02 - Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon
03 - Air Force Organizational Excellence Award Ribbon
04 - Air Force Good Conduct Medal (Est 1963) - Criteria: Exemplary conduct, efficiency, and fidelity during 3 years of active enlisted service with the US Air Force.
05 - Humanitarian Service Medal (Est 1977) - 1975 - Present - Criteria: Direct participation in specific operations of a humanitarian nature.
06 - Air Force Overseas Service Short Tour Ribbon
07 - Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon - 2 citations
08 - Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Military Education Grad Ribbon
09 - Air Force Small Arms Expert Ribbon
10 - Air Force Training Ribbon

The USAF Longivity ribbon has one bronze oak leaf cluster which signifies a 2nd award for more than 8 years total service, but less than 12 years. With 9 years worth of Good Conduct medals,(signified by the basic ribbon and 2 OLC's), this guy would have had between 9 and 12 years service. (Unless of course he didn't update his rack.)

Just a few from me....Gunner McCutchon U.S. Navy 1907-24

Nice ribbon rack! I love the early ones. SInce he has an American Defence ribbon with a star, he must have still been in the USN in 1939 . Are you sure he left the Navy in 1924?

Kurt,

I think he was recalled for WWII.....The original research was done in 1994 by Al Gleim

That would make sense! Having just the Am Def ribbon on the bar without anything else , and the GCM being on the end, helps date it too.

I knew Al too... The medal collecting community is not the same without him

Agreed...a "crusty guy" but he was "the Man" when it came to research.

Definately. Al could come across as gruff and stubborn sometimes but he had a heart of gold. I met him when I was 17 and a " newbie " . He took me under his wing as a young collector and taught me a lot. I will always remember him for that!

Here's an oldie but one of my favorites. William Ball was awarded Certificate of Merit No. 41 on 17 March 1908 for an action at Arroyo de Lanao, Philippine Islands, on 4 June 1905. His citation reads, "For display of conspicuous courage and prompt fearless action in an engagement with Palajanes, in killing two riflemen and one boloman with his own hand, thus protecting the left flank of his company's skirmish line." PFC Ball later served in the 1st Infantry Division during WWI.

Glad to see dtom's C of M ribbon bar. Speaking of which, here's my favorite bar:

http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/2562/clipboard8kt5.jpg

It's very narrow, which is not unusual for that era. Don't know whose it was...
