tom2001 Posted December 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2010 Prior to WWII, sailors were issued a Continuous Service Certificate book, which contained information such as their duty stations, personal description, etc. These books were typically held in the ship's safe during the time of a sailor's stay aboard. When the USS Arizona was sunk on 12/7/41, the CSC books aboard went down with the ship, inside the ships safe. During salvage operations in early 1942, the safe was recovered, and the CSC books belonging to those MIA or KIA aboard the ship were eventually sent to their next of kin. Below is pictured the CSC Book belonging to Mus1c Frederick Kinney, the bandmaster aboard Arizona. First pics show the cover of the book, water damaged from its time on the bottom of Pearl Harbor:

KASTAUFFER Posted May 19, 2019 Share #16 Posted May 19, 2019 Hello Everyone I am bringing this thread back up to add additional photos to the thread. Tom Lane passed away this last year and he always knew I wanted Kinney's CSC book. I remember the day when he bought it! We proposed possible possible deals back and forth , but were never able to make a trade. He cherished the group. Tom's passing is not the way I wanted this to occur. I knew Tom for over 20 years and he was a good friend, he will be missed. Kinney's memorabilia is now in my possession. Many of you know of my interest in Pearl Harbor through the work of my Father In Law Ray Emory , who also passed this year at the age of 97. He was a USS Honolulu Pearl Harbor survivor who worked endlessly to identify the Pearl Harbor unknowns laid to rest in Hawaii. His work led to the USS Oklahoma identifications happening now. I am glad that Bandmaster Kinney's and Tom's memory will live on through this thread.
