Take the High Ground! is a Korean War film, starring Richard Widmark and Karl Malden as drill instructors who must transform a batch of everyday civilians into soldiers.

In May 1953, a new group of Army recruits at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas encounter their drill instructors, Sgt. Laverne Holt (Karl Malden) and the tough-as-nails Sgt. Thorne Ryan (Richard Widmark). After Ryan's caustic appraisal of the recruits, Holt vows to make soldiers out of them during their sixteen weeks of basic training. Ryan, a combat veteran who resents his stateside duty, repeatedly applies for a transfer back to the Korean front.

"Strategic Air Command" starring James Stewart. Just watched it (again!) Fantastic air > air photography and incredible 50s USAF hardware/uniforms!

How many remember......."Tribes".

Adrian Stone is a draftee like any other except for his Hindu robe, long hair and sandals. Drake is the sargeant with the task of turning this hippie into a Marine. Problem is - the hippie can't be broken. Even his barracks mates start meditating. AKA: "The Soldier Who Declared Peace." ;)

Jan-Michael Vincent, Darren McGavin, Earl Holliman, John Gruber

The 'no battle scenes' proviso happily saves this thread from becoming yet another laundry list of war movies.

I'd suggest FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. When I first saw it as a teenager, I was disappointed that so much of the novel had been cut. But I now see it as a masterpiece of screen writing, in that nothing of importance to the story is omitted, and cutting the 800+ page novel allows the story to focus on the parallel experiences of the two protagonists with their respective girlfriends. Given that the film was made in the '50s, they had to bowdlerize Donna Reeds hooker character into a 'hostess,' but its blatently clear how shes earning her living. The one false note is an obviously inserted scene where the company commander who has been persecuting Montgomery Clift is told by the CG to resign on be courtmartialed--*laff*--but this was the army's 'price' for letting the moviemakers shoot at Schofield Barracks. In the novel the guy was promoted to major.

THE BEGUILED starring Clint Eastwood as a soldier during the American Civil War

While imprisoned in a Confederate girls boarding school, a Union soldier cons his way into each of the lonely women's hearts.

Wounded Yankee soldier Eastwood is rescued from the field by several southern school girls. He finds himself in an isolated all girls school surrounded by young ladies from about 10 years old up to the middle aged school mistress. Kinky! Crushes and jealousy kick in as Eastwood attempts to get as much mileage out of his situation as he can. He's a nasty man, but these are some nasty girls.

I have always liked "Mr Roberts". My Grandfather's stories of serving in a USAAF Rescue Squadron in the Pacific are very similar. I also like "From Here To Eternity" but if you have the time, I recommend reading the book.
