In May 1953, a new group of Army recruits at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas encounter their drill instructors, Sgt. Laverne Holt (Karl Malden) and the tough-as-nails Sgt. Thorne Ryan (Richard Widmark). After Ryan's caustic appraisal of the recruits, Holt vows to make soldiers out of them during their sixteen weeks of basic training. I'd suggest FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. When I first saw it as a teenager, I was disappointed that so much of the novel had been cut. But I now see it as a masterpiece of screen writing, in that nothing of importance to the story is omitted, and cutting the 800+ page novel allows the story to focus on the parallel experiences of the two protagonists with their respective girlfriends. Given that the film was made in the '50s, they had to bowdlerize Donna Reeds hooker character into a 'hostess,' but its blatently clear how shes earning her living. The one false note is an obviously inserted scene where the company commander who has been persecuting Montgomery Clift is told by the CG to resign on be courtmartialed--*laff*--but this was the army's 'price' for letting the moviemakers shoot at Schofield Barracks. Wounded Yankee soldier Eastwood is rescued from the field by several southern school girls. He finds himself in an isolated all girls school surrounded by young ladies from about 10 years old up to the middle aged school mistress. Kinky! Crushes and jealousy kick in as Eastwood attempts to get as much mileage out of his situation as he can. He's a nasty man, but these are some nasty girls.
