BEAST Posted August 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2007 A guy at work is cleaning out his uncle's estate and knew I was interested in the uniforms. He dropped these off to me. He went in 1937 and was discharged in 1947. All of his wartime service was stateside, where he traveled with a USN baseball team. Later on, he was an instructor at Great Lakes in Illinois. I like the Athletic Instructor speciality rank, but one of the Boatswain's coats is made from a very nice tailored gabardine material from a tailor in Florida. He says he has several photos, letters and documents, but his sister wants those. I asked him to bring them in and I would scan them and return the originals. Many of the photos are of him playing baseball. He also thinks he has some insignia. Hopefully I will get those also.
dpcsdan Posted August 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 26, 2007 Very nice! I especially like the right arm "boats" rating badges.
wolventm Posted August 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 26, 2007 All the blouses are a great find, the right arm BM rates are NICE, but the left arm speciality athletic rates WAAAAY harder to find.
Bob Hudson Posted August 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2007 Great uniforms. Apparently they called that rating Sp(A) or SPECIALIST (A) and from 1942-44 they were also known as "Athletic Instructors" - then from 42-48 as "Physical Training Instructors." After 48 they changed the rating from Sp(A) Physical Training Instructor to ESE - Physical Training Instructor. There several other ratings that used a single letter inside a diamond: So would it be correct to assume the A in a diamond was only used 42-48? For sure, there could not have been too many guys who wore that rating in those six years.
BEAST Posted August 27, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted August 27, 2007 Thanks for the great repsonses! This is another example fo why this forum is so useful. I had never heard about the diamond ratings until a few weeks ago, when it was discussed in another topic. I would have had no clue what these were when he brought them in. I really hope he does bring in the photos of his uncle playing baseball for the Navy. Those would really compliment these uniforms. I also wonder if he played with any big name baseball stars and if there are photos of him with them?

I believe the gray working uniforms were dropped in '47, so that would further date them as WW2 era. G
