Hi Guys,

I,m glad to finally get a set of these. All comments are welcome. The trousers are more worn and don,t match the jacket, although something i find interesting is that inside the fly of the trousers the camo matches the jacket again.

Hope these pictures are ok. This is my first attempt at posting.

Cheers,

The photos look great.

Just remember to hit the "enter key" twice after typing in text and before putting in a photo. Do the same thing after a photo before typing. That way the text will be above or below the photo and not beside it.

Where did you find the cammies?

Thanks for the advice. Glad you like these. I actually stumbled across them on e-bay a few months ago and made sure they came to me. Got a good price too. I just love these camo items.

A very nice set. The trousers are a little large to match up with a size 36 coat, but that would not be very noticable depending on the display set up.

The variance in color shade of all ww2 camo was sometimes substantial. I have seen coats, trousers and even own a USMC helmet cover constructed with 2 different shades! I suppose they tried to match shades of color cloth bolts when possible, but in fact it was apparently not an issue with quartermaster inspectors. Standardization of dye lots by manufacturers etc. during ww2 was a technical problem not entirely solved. Actually, it was a problem that lasted until fairly recent times.

People tend to associate these Army 2 piece camo uniforms with the Normandy invasion, but they were also used in limited quantity in the Pacific. I have picture in a book showing a group of American and Filipino artillery men firing 105's in central Luzon (Philippines) during the 1945 liberation, and one of the Americans is wearing the camo coat with standard OD trousers.

Hello,

Your set is the camo fatigues for the ARMY that was first used in Normandy invasion but in very short time because of the confusion with the Waffen SS spot camo fatigues. They were probably used in the pacific front, but most of them were given to French at the beginning of the Indochina War, mostly issued to paratroopers of the Foregn Legion. Also, it exists a coverall made in the same material.

Cheers

That's the general accepted story, but there's no proof that this was the reason thay were worn only for a short time...

It is more probable that they were issued as a test and that at the next change of uniforms they were handed in and only standard wools were agin distributed...

There are more topics about this on the forum, there's a topic listing most of the known pictures showing these in use in France in July-August 1944....

Does anyone have any other comments on these ?

Tazpants,

Your set is without a doubt the real deal. At the Front makes very good reproduction HBT camo but it's not perfect. The pattern is similar but not 100% correct and the thread used today is most likely cotton wrapped polyester which is thinner than WW2 100% cotton thread.

Here's an example of a repro HBT camo as compared to an orginal. Original on the left & repro on the right.

Original set in my collection.

Another likely reason is the fact the camo was designed for jungle environments and ultimately failed in that respect as well. They faded into a light shade very rapidly due to washing which defeated their effective camouflage value.

This was a problem with the standard OD HBT uniforms as well and was partially solved with the darker OD No.7 issue which started to replace the earlier shade.
