Unique tie bar made of WWI Air Service Insignia

Here's a recent addition to my WWI insignia collection. This has to be quite a unique piece considering this variant for overseas Air Service was obsolete within a couple of months of its inception (see pg 49-50 of "The Collar Disc Story 1907-1999" by A. Scipio). What is more, the winged globe & US were applied to what appears to be a tie clip. Has any one else seen such an example before?

Interesting piece Mr. Thomas. Look forward to learning more about this piece.

Thank you Mr. Kelley. My best guess is that this is a customized piece, manufactured possibly in France, for someone in the Air Service wanting that 'unique' show of esprit de corps.

Hi,

I don't have a tie clip, but I do have a match safe with the same type winged globe applied.

Steven,

That sounds like an interesting piece. Care to post it here? I'd understand if you didn't want to. I'm just trying to get a visual reference. Thanks for the reply!

Hi. Sure I will. I just didn't want to hi-jack your post. I'll take a couple of shots tonight and post them tomorrow. ;)

Wow, that is truly an amazing piece. Thank you for taking the time to post it here. I tried looking for a maker mark on mine but had no luck.

My pleasure. I am not sure who this maker is.

It does not show in the photo, but there is a small pin hole at the upper edge of the safe, and below that, near the bottom is where the mm resides. I would also like to add that the wing must be finely soldered on, as there is no pin or protrusion through to the inside of the match safe.

Hmmm...fascinating. The winged globe and US were also finely soldered onto the piece I posted. There's nothing peeping through on the reverse indicating otherwise.
