Tonomachi Posted August 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2007 August 18, 2007 Picked up a number of things at the flea market yesterday. I paid $10.00 for this photograph of a young man in some sort of uniform with a cap badge that has a shield in the middle with the initials US SB? Anyone know what this is? Could it be some sort of early Coast Guard? I purchased a 1942 dated mountain pack for $25.00 that contained camping gear to include a couple of knives one of which I think is military. I've seen a similar pocket knifes in another post but this one lacks the US marking. It is only marked "MADE IN US". Is this military or civilian? What about the Remington Dupont knife that is marked "RH 32". Is this military or civilian? I bought a USS Ranger CVA-61 lighter etched with the initials "E.E." for $12.00 and some sort of distinctive unit crest with a 1936 Berlin olympic pin for $20.00. The unit crest is marked NS Meyers New York with their shield. Can anyone identify the unit? Army Air Corps possibly? I also bought the senior grade EOD badge marked NS Meyers New York Sterling M22 for $10.00 and some Nazi insignia and holster that came out of a foot locker belonging to SFC Anthony J. Snyder Jr. RA 11034469, Kaiserlautern, Germany. Dennis

Bones Posted August 19, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 19, 2007 The DUI is for the 18th Wing Air Corps, that is from the ASMIC charge list. You have found some nice items there.

jhs1970426 Posted September 16, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 16, 2008 Nice finds! I like that pack! Every US pack i find is either stained, shredded, or way overpriced. I have a holster exactly like the green one for the .45 but unfortunately mine is not marked either. And I cannot find any information about anywhere. Do you, or anyone else, have any ideas if these holsters are military (WWII? VIETNAM?) or just for regular civilian use?
Polygon Posted September 16, 2008 Share #9 Posted September 16, 2008 That M1942 pack is pretty incredible in terms of the markings. Never seen any so crisp!

I believe the US SB stands for the United States Shipping Board This is what I found on the web: U.S. Shipping Board - The U.S. Shipping Board was created in September 1916 and organized in January 1917 to revitalize the U.S. merchant fleet. It built some 1,000 cargo ships, commandeered more than 2 million tons of shipping from private yards and owners, and operated the German ships seized by the U.S. government when it declared war on Germany in 1917. The house flag of the USSB was 6 x 9 feet, white with a three-star version of the shield from the U.S. COA superimposed on a blue anchor and flanked by the letters US and SB. According to the 1917 volume of U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, pages 2345 and 2346, the flag was designed by Charles Collens, a Boston architect. The USSB was redesignated the U.S. Shipping Bureau in the Department of Commerce in 1933, then disestablished and replaced by the Maritime Commission when Congress passed the Merchant Marine Act of 1936. Its functions operating the government merchant fleet were lost to the Merchant Fleet Corporation in 1927, which was also subsumed into the Maritime Commission in 1936. Tim B Posted July 30, 2016 Share #13 Posted July 30, 2016 Older thread but wanted to add some info here: First, if you look closely at the style of anchor stocks, it gives indication to the era of the device, which in this example is between 1917 - 1933. The device changed somewhat after that as shown in the flags below.
Tim B Posted July 30, 2016 Share #14 Posted July 30, 2016 Second, here's a couple more examples that sold on Ebay within the last year. This is the "other ranks" enlisted cap device, Screwpost attachment and measures roughly 1 5/8" X 1 1/4" in size.
