MWalsh Posted August 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2007 I got this hat badge the other day, with a small group of other items which did not help me date it unfortunately. It's a pretty standard sized emblem Ithink, brass made, and it is Gaunt made, but then notes on it's reverse (picture shown) JR Gaunt, New York, Made in England. Can anyone help me to date this, and what's the story on US Made Gaunt insignia? I thought they were strictly a British made emblem. Thanks! Bob Hudson Posted August 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 14, 2007 The name Gaunt comes up a lot in the forum discussions of US Marine Corp emblems (EGA's). The Gaunt emblems were indeed sold in the US. We've got some of the Army ones in a forum thread at http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...;f=4&t=4759
bobgee Posted August 14, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 14, 2007 Mike Based on the markings...........J.R.Gaunt New York MADE in England......this piece was made in England and marketed in the U.S. Not sure but I beleive Gaunt had a NY office. They supplied items almost exclusively officer insignia, via Uniform Stores (tailors) and PXs during WWII and even earlier in the 30's. Tonomachi Posted August 14, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2007 August 14, 2007 This is a great forum as I'm always learning about things in my collection that I never knew about. I bought this officer's hat badge at a flea market for $5.00 a couple of years ago and always wondered why it was hallmarked, "Luxenburg MADE IN ENGLAND". Now I know and this piece has a slightly different hallmark (no NEW YORK below Luxenburg) than the one in the very informative thread.
