War and Peace, 2010, Beltring, England.

As I write this, War & Peace 2010 is entering its closing stages for another year. For those of you who are maybe not familiar with it, it is Europe's biggest annual gathering of military vehicles, re-enactors and traders, held annually at Beltring, in beautiful rural Kent. (You can visit the website at www.thewarandpeaceshow.com )

The scale of this event is awesome! Acres of military vehicles from all over Europe assembled for a week in an encampment which looks like something from pre-D-Day! Apart from the stars of the show, the wheeled and tracked vehicles themselves, their crews usually set up authentic encampments around them and wear appropriate uniforms so it's just like stepping back in time. This year, the list of vehicles present read like the pages from a telephone directory...getting on for one thousand of all types...everything from Jeeps to Dragon Wagons and HumVees to Hetzers...plus everything in between! The logistics involved in assembling the vast convoys of vehicles is staggering! Ward La France wreckers from Norway, GMCs from France and Belgium, M20s from the Netherlands...plus the sizeable home-grown Brit contingent! All are brought at the owner's expense and the costs are not insubstantial. Many arrive on low-loaders but smaller vehicles travel along the motorway network...I passed several Jeep and GMC convoys myself! Petrol (gas) is much more expensive in Europe and some of these military monsters are gas-guzzlers in the extreme...it gallons to the mile rather than vice-versa..so the costs incurred in running them is not insignificant!

As usual, the weather was hot and sunny. Very little rain in the preceeding weeks meant that the ground was very dry so the vehicles kicked up lot of dust when they were on the move...so much so that water trucks were sent round at intervals to dampen it down. Ironically, the layer of red dust which settled on every OD painted vehicle enhanced the authenticity of their appearance!

I have a lot of pics to upload which will probably take me at least 15 mins, so if you happen upon this thread, hang in there whilst I do so. I won't include captions...rather, I'll let the pics do the talking!
