DwightPruitt Posted March 16, 2008 Share #51 Posted March 16, 2008 I wonder what hit it? It was enough to take the turret off the ring but not enough to knock it clear off. Hard telling what hit it. I noticed that it's missing both the drive sprocket and idler wheel. Both are high-wear items, and I'd bet that they were cannabalized. It looks like the tracks are trailing off behind. I think it was cleared of the road by a VTR or dozer.
Jim Baker Posted March 16, 2008 Author Share #52 Posted March 16, 2008 Hi Dwight, I was thinking the same thing. I've got several photos of knocked out Shermans that were stripped of parts. That would also explain why the tracks were taken apart evenly. It's possible the turret was set back on the hull by the mechanics.
cashman Posted March 17, 2008 Share #53 Posted March 17, 2008 Jim... I concur with you on the picture of the flipped Sherman. That was a great find!! There are probably more pictures of it out there somewhere? Thanks!!!

Charlie Flick Posted March 21, 2008 Share #59 Posted March 21, 2008 Here is a Sherman, in this case owned by the US Marines, located at Cape Gloucester in the PTO. Looks to be having a little barrel maintenance underway. Regards, Charlie Flick

Jeeper704 Posted March 23, 2008 Share #63 Posted March 23, 2008 These two pictures come from a color movie (by George Stevens if I remember correctly) hence the lesser quality. But I thought they are interesting. Sherman Tank Dozer in France 1944. Followed by a Sherman with "rhino points" (hedge cutter or hedge buster).
