The Great War in Europe delayed retirement for the aging Class of ’79 and provided a final stage for their services. Among the 'lifers,' one, Hunter Liggett, rose to the rank of Lieutenant General commanding 1st Army in the A.E.F. Three were major generals including A. L. Mills, F. H. French, and H.A. Greene along with 10 brigadiers, four of whom commanded divisions and brigades either stateside or in France.

Twenty-one of the Class of '79 retired as full bird colonels. Three extraordinary officers, Lloyd M. Brett, Thomas A. Cruse, and Albert L. Mills, were awarded the CMOH, the first two for Indian War and Mills for Spanish-American War heroism, while Brett added a DSM for the First War. Other graduates received foreign awards and honors from France, England, and Japan.

Dedication of the Soldier’s Monument - November 3,1909. The gentlemen standing in the front two rows are veterans of the Civil War. The women in the third row are wives or widows of the veterans. The “Sentinel” or Civil War Monument was erected by the Grand Army of the Republic. Zoia Monuments mounted the statue on its base. The symbols of the infantry, cavalry, navy, and marines are carved on the sides. Over time it became the memorial to veterans of all wars

Soldiers from the 8th Cavalry Regiment sit alongside a hill. During the Spanish-American War, members of the 8th Regiment traveled to Cuba to secure the island.

Here's a favorite from my collection, Captain George C. Starr who commanded Company D, 3rd United States Colored Cavalry. He was killed in action while leading his company in a cavalry fight near Benton, Mississippi, on May 14, 1864.

Here are veterans of the 114th Ohio Volunteer Infantry taken in 1891. Organized September 11, 1862, under Colonel John Cradlebaugh, in December it joined Sherman's expedition against Vicksburg. The Regiment participated in the assault at Chickasaw Bayou, and in January moved with the army upon Arkansas Post. In the spring of 1863 it remained in camp at Young's Point and Milliken's Bend, losing over 100 men by sickness. The Regiment joined Grant's movement around Vicksburg, and participated in the battles of Champion Hills, Black River Bridge and the Siege of Vicksburg. After the surrender it moved to Louisiana and Texas and remained in active service there until January, 1865, when it was ordered to Florida. It soon returned to Texas, and in July returned to Ohio and was mustered out.

My great-great grandfather, Robert Bowland/Bowlin, is at the far left on the front row (kneeling).
